S&W Model 10-5 2" 38spl?

I ran across one of these in a shop the other day, and it felt great. I really wanted it, but I don't can't keep prices straight on Smith revolvers. The guy was asking $400, it was in great shape. Is the price fair, should I grab it?

I think that is a fair price. You can always haggle and see if they will deal a little. Very nice guns.

Jake, I'll put it this way:I paid $290.00 here in IN. about 3 weeks ago, for a Blued 10-8-4" HB. It has your usual holster wear on both sides of the muzzle, but the lock up is tight=Carried++Shot--. The seller threw in an Uncle Mike's nylon holster+a dozen rounds of Factory Loads. I think that we BOTH got a good deal..Bill.

I agree. I wouldn't pay $400 unless I it looked almost NIB with only the slightest hint of a turn line.

He told me twice it was "pinned and recessed" but didn't explain what that meant. Anybody know?

The price of 2" Model 10s is usually a bit higher than 4" as they are rarer but $300-350 sounds more like it if it is really nice.

It may be pinned (the barrel) but it ain't recessed (the case heads totally enclosed in the cylinder) as 357s were recessed, not 38s.

Griz is right. The 2" are a bit rarer to find, especially in top condition. Just not a big snub man myself.

Agree with fireside44 - the 2" snubs tend to be popular and (despite the Model 10 being about the most common S&W revolver ever made) they tend to be a bit scarce. They are GREAT shooters.

I have a 2" square-butt model 10-5 that I happily paid ~$450 for a few years ago - it's the only one I'd seen in person in almost a decade.

Personally I don't care for 2" Model 10's. If I want the short barrel, I want a smaller frame gun, but I've seen a couple of 2" 10's at my usual dealer lately and $400.00 is right in the asking range. Those weren't beat up, but weren't in near new condition either. If I was interested I'd make an offer and we'd probably settle for $350.00.

If it's a 10-5 it will have a pinned barrel, but the cylinder won't be recessed. It really doesn't matter in a shooter.

If you look carefully, just in front of the sight groove, you'll see a little "bump." That's the pin. Smith & Wesson used to screw the barrel in, then put that pin in to hold it in place. At some point the early 80's I believe they stopped doing it and went to crush fitting the barrel. One really isn't better than the other, the pin is just a sign of an older gun, made when a lot of people consider the quality to have been better. It's really more important to collectors, I think, but never a bad thing.
