Saw a good friend of mine at the range today, he was trying some new revolver loads. One of the guns he had was verrry interesting. He called it a "parts" gun, but it was anything but!

It was a 4" heavy barrel Model 10-6 (as marked inside the crane) but was also marked and chambered for .357 Magnum. It had a wide smooth trigger and an orange insert in the front sight. Plus an incredibly smooth trigger pull. The blueing job was typical old S&W, very deep and brilliant.

He got it from a local gun shop who told him it came from the local county sheriff. Hard to tell if that was true, but I did get the serial number to check it out. D710xxx was made about 1974 according to Supica and Nahas. In their Model 10 section they mention a run of several thousand Model 10's chambered in .357 Magnum for the New York State Police in 1972. This one seems to match the description in their book.

Oh, the worst part of all....he paid only $150 for it.

I offered him two hundred cash but he just laughed at me. I wonder why...
