Any fans of the model 10 out there?
I'm picking this one up today, and can't wait to try it out. The proportions and balance on this gun are near perfect and it just looks and feels right. Any cc holster suggestions? How about favorite loads?

Everyone should have a couple of Model 10s. I have short fingers and prefer the round butt. Take a look at the DeSantis Speed Scabbard (without the strap). I have one of these for every gun I carry and have found it to be fast and very secure without the safety strap (I did get one with the strap for my 1911). I like the "FBI load" 158 SWC HP in 38 as you will still get expansion in 38 spl.

Check out the Gayloard Marshall for IWB and the Magnum Treasury Thunderbolt for OWB from Bell Charter Oak:

The old standby, the 158gr LSWCHP +P from Remington is a good carry load, and the Speer 135gr Gold Dot looks to be a good preformer also. As far as relaods go I really like 3.8gr of 231 under the 158gr LSWC.

A used Model 10 is about the best value in a revolver you can get these days, IMO, but I favor the ones with the pencil barrels. Enjoy it.

Thanks for the replies.

I picked it up tonight. I'm looking very hard, and there are absolutely no wear marks or scratches anywhere, not even on the stocks. I can't say for sure that it's even been fired! I think I truly lucked out. :D

I will look at both holsters. ;)

Mine is a 10-5, it has the pinned barrel and a thinner barrel than some models. Shots just great.

The pistol shoots to point of aim with 158 grain bullets. My favorite load is a 158 L with 3.5 grains Bullseye. Any case any primer. Have shot this in a lot of 38 Specials and it shoots well in all of them. Generally speaking this is a 750 fps load but on this hot day the velocities were a bit higher.

158 LRN 3.5grs Bullseye Mixed cases WSP 5-Aug-06 T = 100 °F

Ave Vel = 796
Std Dev = 13.89
ES 55.24
High 813
Low 757.9
N = 23

Hello and congratulations on your Model 10. Count me in as a big fan of this revolver, particularly the 3 and 4" versions.

Best.

Enjoy, model 10's are great.

If it doesn't already have one get a set of rubber grips like uncle mike's, Pacmyers or Hogues. IMHO the small wooden factory grips suck and make the 10s unpleasent to shoot.

A second on the Desantis Speed Scabbard.

Remington 158 grain +P LHPSWC are great for defense in 3 or 4 inch barrels.

My favorite handload is a 158 grain cast or swaged lead bullet over 4.4 grains of 231.

I'll make it three votes for the DeSantis Speed Scabbard if your Model 10 has a 3" barrel http://www.desantisholster.com/002.html

If it has a 4" barrel you will need to buy the Thumb Break Scabbard http://www.desantisholster.com/001.html

I agree the FBI load will work very well with your Model 10. Speed Gold Dot SD ammo is very good too. For practice I buy Remington's 130 gr .38 Sp FMJ UMC Bulk Packs. It comes in a 250 round box, 5 trays of 50 rounds.

Please post some photos when you get it home...

I will post photos as soon as I replace my freshly stolen digital camera :scrutiny: .
Stephen, thanks for the link and your great articles. I've enjoyed your site in the past :) .
This will be primarily the family house gun. Up until now, that role has been played by a 3" stainless GP100 with fixed sights, which has always held .38spl rounds while on "standby". While an accurate and sturdy weapon, it was heavy on the hip and so carried only infrequently. I don't believe that a .357 is needed or wanted for the defense of an occupied home (overpenetration issues) and I for one believe the .38 to be quite capable of inflicting serious damage. I have other, more powerful guns; the .38 is one of my favorite calibers and my choice for family use/defense. This model 10 will also be carried by me when not carrying my Colt DS, which is my favorite carry gun.
My friend has lusted after this Ruger for years, and I've relented to sell it to him. It will be his first handgun (as it was mine, so many years ago!) and I know he will appreciate and enjoy it as much as I have :D

+4 for Desantis Speed Scabbard. I own one for every revolver I own. The 4" sits up very high over the belt and is as concealable a rig as can be had for a 4" revolver. Check Ebay, check the local gun shows, check the used holster box at the gun store. They were a very popular holster and can be had for very little used. I have two that I paid ten bucks for.
