I was offered a used police trade in Model 10 heavy barrel for $100. I put a box of 50 rounds through it. Timing is good; it functions smoothly in both single and double action and is accurate. It shows holster wear but I'd say still has 90% bluing. There's no rust and it also has a set of Pachmayr, finger groove grips.

The only real flaw I can find is the thumb piece of the hammer is very slightly bent to the side. I'm planning on keeping the gun if I buy it so I'm not worried about resale. Should the hammer be a deal breaker? The seller won't let it go for less. Thanks.

No, I wouldn't let the hammer be a deal breaker, get on Brownell's website and see if they have a replacement hammer. Might check Numrich also, for that price, grab it.

Thanks, checked Brownell's and Gun Parts Inc. They sell a "hammer assembly" for 50-60 bucks. You're right that's a good price. I'm going to buy it and leave it as is as long as it works.

That's a steal. Gun fell out the cop's holster and landed on the hammer. A smith could probably tweak it back for $20 or so.

There exists a hammer called, I believe, "cock-eyed" that is a desirable option in some collecting circles. It is however archaic and I've never seen one on a Smith revolver later than the '50's.
