S&W Model 25 Mountain Gun-Special Edition?

I have seen a S&W Model 25 Mountain Gun for sale in .45 Colt with a 4" barrel. The seller indicates that it is a "special edition". Can anyone tell me what this means?

Is it an older gun or will it have MIM parts in it? Anyone care to guess at its value?

I bought a 25-13 45 Colt Mountain Gun last year. It is accurate with a good trigger pull. For the last few years S&W has come out with a "Mountain Gun" that one can pack while camping, hiking, etc. It's lighter (39oz.) than a normal "N" frame with a non-full lug tapered 4" barrel. The last few have been 45 Colt, 44 Magnum, .357 and I think a .45acp. This year it looks like they are coming out with a "J" frame 5" .357 for packing light. To my knowledge, they aren't calling it a Mountain Gun nor has a specifically designated Mountain Gun been produced for this year. Special edition-a Mountain Gun is only produced in a given caliber for a specific year, then production is ended for that specific model. It likely has MIM and an internal lock in it. They were selling full retail for $804.00. I got mine for $599.00 new.

The only different Mountain Gun I've come across was a blued model in 45 Colt. The store wanted more for it ($650) than for the stainless model ($600).

My closest dealer has a blued .45 Colt Mountain Gun in the case. It has the lock, MIM trigger and hammer, frame mounted firing pin and all that jazz.

The Mountain Guns are usually only made for about one year so that does make each version of them a special edition.

The only different Mountain Gun I've come across was a blued model in 45 Colt.

There was also a blued .44mag Mountain Gun a couple of years ago. The M29-8 built from the 4 screw frames left over from the Heritage Series guns.

I bought it.

.45 Colt Mountain Gun, blued, black actually. Love it! I paid south of $650.00.

It's just made for a model year, only "x" amount are made. Next year it could be something a little different? Yea, it has the lock but the fact is, all new ones are going to have them so you either live with it if you like the gun, get used to it or, buy older Smiths.

The mountain guns are sold now as 'Stoking Dealer Exclusives'. The 25MG was preceded last year by the 5" half-lug 686+ with similar f-g squared cocobolo grips and a HiViz front sight and V-notch, while the 25MG had the standard blade/square notch sights. I am not sure about the 5" 60... it may be a regular stock item. My 'pusher' has one... I handled it earlier this week... cute little wood grips - more appropriate for a snubby, I feel. I won't be adding one to my collection.

Re the blued 25MG... if you want to break it in without personalizing that cylinder ring even more, you can do as I did with my new Heritage 24 last year. Remove the cylinder and yoke (front screw) and hold the cylinder release back, towards the hammer while you dry fire. The effort will be a bit less without the cylinder to move, but you will still need to swap hands regularly. If you are not squeamish about removing that sideplate (... and replacing it!), you could do so - and blast the innards with an aerosol cleaner, leaving some gun oil on the axles and slide-surfaces, before re-assembling and dry-firing. It will make a difference.

Yeah, I really am anal enough to preserve my 24's cylinder for real 'live' fire...

The 625 and 629 Mountain Guns I have are definite keepers... enjoy yours!
