Well, I just bought its sibling, the 327 TRR8. About the only difference is that the M&P R8 has a different barrel shroud with the lower rail integral, instead of removable.
I haven't had a chance to take it out to the range yet, but it fits the hand incredibly well, and 8 shots of .38 or .357 is a nice amount of 'whuppin' to have in a sidearm.
From what I've seen, folks are pretty divided on the R8 and TRR8. They either lust after it with the passion of a thousand suns or they recoil in pure horror. I was in the first group, which was why mine followed me home last Friday.
If you want what it has to offer (lightweight Sc/Al frame, 8 shots, rails), then it is a fine gun. If you'd prefer a more traditional gun, then the PC 627 or the newly announced Pro series 627 or even the new regular production 627 might be better choices. I just got tired of that thing haunting my dreams.

Hard call for that. I don't think it would be a good trade. Colt Pythons, even fired, seem to be worth more than the street price on these S&Ws. Unfired, I'd bet your Python is worth more than the MSRP on my TRR8. From an investment point of view, the Python will retain and gain value better than the Smith, which is still in production.
While the M&P R8 is a good gun, if I walked into a gun store and saw them sitting side by side (even both unfired, new in box), I'd probably take the Python over the S&W, because it will do nothing but appreciate. Those Colt revolvers have a STRONG following.

For what it is worth.
TO the post concerning price, No offense is meant. My own regards to the cost of this firearm are that of a question. What is it worth to me? In terms of Knowing it is reliable 100% of the time, and will be there when I need it for the defense of family, friends, and assorted loved ones, not to mention the innocents we samaritans help on the spot, I feel that it is priceless. You can never place a cost on safety and preparedness in my book so the $1,311 MSRP is small change in the long run. Personally, I would like not only the 327 M&P but it's sibling as well, the bigger 325 Thunder Ranch revolver which is the same basic revolver only in 45 ACP. For any Troops who might read this, I salute you. My thoughts and Prayers are with each and every one of you. God Bless you all.

I just can't see why you'd want such a huge revolver to be lightweight, especially if it turns out to be at the cost of long-term durability. In my opinion, it's weight would be fine for carry but not it's overall size. It's overall size would be fine for a home defense/range/fun gun but extra weight would make it more beneficial for those purposes in terms of recoil reduction.
