Was wondering if it would be OK to shoot a few +P out of it once in a blue moon? Just bought this today...Had to buy it..It was too good of a deal to pass-up...Looks to be in very good condition...The serial# starts with a J so I assume it was made after 1981...Any assistance would be greatly appreciated...

I have an early 50's (Pre-36) and mid 60's (36) that I will occasionally shoot +Ps out of (my defense load, 158 gr. LSWCHPs). No problems so far. I'm sure +Ps are more wearing on the gun, but I'll shoot the +Ps to get myself accustomed to the recoil and verify POI vs. POA.

ColtMember, thanks for the reply....I figured +p would be OK if used as you indicated..158gr+P lswchp are one of my self defense favorites to include the Speer 135gr+P short barrel stuff..I did a search on the S&W forums and found that some of the 36 folks do use +P but not a steady diet..I am guessing but I think my 36-1 was made in the 1978/79 time-frame... Serial # J622xxx...

Put about fifty rounds thru the S&W 36...Shoots sweet to include the few +P I put down range...The POI was spot on with the PIA using the 158gr+P LSWCHP...The stock grips seem a little anemic but that is an easy fix...Gonna hafta get another gun safe soon...

Glad to hear you and your 36 are getting along! The Standard Catalog by Supica & Nahas lists your serial # in the 1977-78 time-frame. Congratulations on your new addition to the family!

I would not if it were mine.

Might be OK. May get away with it. I would not. They were made to be 38 spl's, and while you can; there are other revolver out there that are made to adaquately handle +p's and a good steel snub nose will take them all and have weight to supress magnum recoil. Now that's just my opinion.

I've put dozens of +P loads through my Model 36. It hasn't seems to harm the gun at all. Mostly it's me that bothered by the recoil.

I have a 36-1 with a similar born-on date. I've fired dozens of +P rounds (and a few +P+ ;) ) out of it with no problems of loosening or headspace increasing.

BTW, acc. to Supica & Nahas, yours was probably made '77-'78 (about what you thought) and mine (J486XXX) was probably made '76-'77. :)
