I have been looking at this nice Smith & Wesson model 37 or may be a pre 37.
the serial number is 1412xx. It has a flat latch and diamond stocks, round butt.
locks up tight. very light holster wear. I'm trying to figure out the year of manufacture. I'm thinking maybe late fifty's but not sure . Any information would be greatly appreciated,..thanks

**** WARNING! DO NOT FIRE THIS GUN *****
Use a magnet to check the cylinder. If it is not magnetic it is unsafe to fire.

The pre-model 37 .38 Chiefs Special Airweight was introduced in 1951, around serial number 13000 with an alloy frame and cylinder, the alloy cylinder continued until serial number 44577. These are unsafe to fire. The USAF ordered a large quantity and subsequently destroyed them. The alloy cylinder will bring a large premium from a collector, $800 for excellent condition to $1500 for New In Box, per the Standard catalog of S&W.
Early guns in the 13000 range used the short trigger guard and the short I frame grip of the original Baby Chiefs Special. These will bring a premium from a collector, on top of the premium for the alloy frame.
Early guns with or without the smaller trigger guard may have a 5th frame screw, at the top of the side plate in front of the hammer. Again worth a premium.
The gun you are looking at was manufactured in 1951 or 1952, with 1951 being my guess.

If it has a steel cylinder then shoot it.
II it has an aluminum cylinder at a steel cylinder price then I would consider buying it as trade bait.
