Hi, I just acquired a "NIB" S&W Model 40 from GunBroker, and the cylinder crane hinge protrudes about 1mm or 2mm past the front of the frame. I know this is abnormal, and I was wondering if there is any way to tell if a cylinder/crane belongs to a certain revolver.

When I look under the cartridge ejector on the cylinder, I see numbers but none that correspond with the revolver's serial number stamped on the frame. Should these numbers match? Could the seller have switched cylinders/cranes on me?

Pictures would help. The numbers in the frame are assembly codes etc and have nothing to do with the serial number on the butt of the gun.

Unlikely someone switched cranes on you.

What is likely though, is someone had the gun apart, and switched the two dome-head side-plate screws.

The one that holds the crane in is fitted to the frame & crane at the factory.
The other one behind the trigger isn't.

They look the same, but they are most certainly not.

Try switching them and see if that helps.

Here is a pic. As you can see, the crane is flush against the back of the frame, so it's not as if it's loose. But it is protruding conspicuously past the front of frame. It just looks like it wasn't matched or blended in with the frame. Any chance S&W would fix this under warranty? Looking at the side plate and crane lock screws, it doesn't look like they have been fiddled with at all...not even the slightest finish is rubbed off in the screw slots, so i think it came from the factory this way.
