I just purchased a used model 686 (4 in.) that was from a lot of service revolvers used by a European police force. I had a friend look up the serial no. BUC8xxx for me in his S&W book but he couldn't find any listed with the BUCxxxx code. Any help would be appreciated.

In the SCSW, you may have to extrapolate the serial number prefixes to get the date. The SCSW shows BRF as starting in August 1994. The next series, CAM, starts in January 1996. It would follow that your 686 would probably be from sometime between the two dates. A call to S&W would probably yield the actual ship date. More than that, you'd need to request a letter from Roy Jinks @ $50.

Thanks pendennis. Radagast on another S&W thread guessed 1995. Now I just need to polish it up a little bit more and take her to the range.

The 686 in trex1310's pic is a post 2001 686 by virtue of its lock, changed frame lines and trough in the back of the MIM trigger.

Sometimes S&W sets aside batches of serial numbers and uses them at later dates. They often did this with LEO semi auto orders. Evidently they also did it with law enforcement revolvers as well.
