I hear tell that the S&W MP15-22's are out on the market now, and I was wondering if anybody here had a chance to own or fondle one. A buddy of mine is looking for an inexpensive plinker, but prefers the tacticool stuff. My first thought was GSG-5 , having held the Colt M4's 22's and deciding they were pretty much garbage, but I forgot about S&W's.

For anybody that's managed to find one, what did you think? Fit & finish, decent operation, etc? It's not going to be used for match or varmint or anything, so accuracy is not a huge factor (Though if it's a tack driver, that would be a big plus, obviously.) Just the feel, operation, and a reasonable measure of reliability of the weapon, and ability to hit somewhere reasonably close to POA at 25 & 50 yds. The occasional FTF or something isn't huge, as long as it's not every 20 rounds or something.

P.S. - For those who might be curious why I dismissed the M4 .22LR as "garbage" - Both examples I've used had horrible collapsible stocks that wobbled like a half inch in all directions. I don't expect it to be weld-tight or anything, but they were both bad enough that the stock was basically pointless. The charging handle is exceptionally short, far shorter than a real AR. Safety position goes 180 degrees instead of the expected 90. Plastic components felt very, very cheap. I will say the metal body seemed pretty good. New out of the box, the bolt would not close on one of the rifles unless forced, and had to be returned. The other one seemed to suffer from a similar, though not quite as horrible, issue, and the bolt would bind up about halfway through and would need to be cycled to get it closed again.
