Picked one up from my local shop today, I was suprised really to find it out this early. They didn't have one with the safety, oh well. This thing is nice. Took it home and compared to my 220. It is as big as my Sig P220 almost exactly. The slide is 27mm wide and the grip is 28mm measured at the magwell. This has by far a more comfortable grip than the Glock 21SF. Looking at this you really ask yourself why Glock needs such a fat slide. This thing is what a Glock fullsize G36 single stack aspires to be. Sorry, can't post pics. Can't wait till the weekend.

Agreed. I handled - but didn't shoot - both at an outdoor expo recently. The MP is much better shaped as well as slimmer.

Agreed. But it is really designed around the 10mm Auto (it has a twin in the G20), a more powerful cartridge than the .45. IMO if it were a stand-alone model specifically engineered for the .45 it could be made a lot slimmer. But so far no one at GLOCK has seen fit to listen to me. ;)

My MP9C felt a little "scratchy" when new, but a hundred rounds of shooting and dry-firing smoothed it up. It does have a rather vague reset point, however.

I want one, but a manual safety seems superfluous. Is this optional? (The one I tried had one.)

The M&P .40 I had was much the same way with the trigger. But after about 200 rounds...WOW. Felt much different. The XD can be the same way, but the M&P feels closer to single action once broken in. And I have no problem with a trigger that needs breaking in.

Ala Dan.... the M&P trigger smoothes out considerably after several hundred rounds (yes, my M&P 40 Compact is my witness) and also has a design which lends itself wonderfully to trigger jobs resulting is superb trigger pulls. Don't shy away from one because of the trigger feel when new.

SOX... let's see some pics of that .45!

I don't have a M&P pistol, but can somewhat attest to the trigger getting better after a couple hundred rounds. One of the dealers I frequent had a couple in stock recently and let me try the triggers on two of them. One was brand new and the other had been used in the "try before you buy" program for a few weeks. Its triggger was like butter compared to the unfired pistol.

I liked the M&P just fine (the ones I handled were 9mm), but I'm more of a 1911 guy so I doubt I'll buy one.

The trigger will never be a 1911 trigger. However, it cleans up nicely through use, and can be tweaked pretty easily, too. My first experience with the gun (40 version) was one that had already been "broken in". When I was issued mine, I was a little annoyed with the gritty/busy trigger, but it smoothed up nicely. I still don't like the overtravel and reset, but I understand that both of those are very fixable.

I'm not a big fan of the trigger on mine (M&P 9mm). I think it will be traded in on a P2000SK when the time is right.

It has well over 600 rounds through too.

Only a 1911 is going to have a 1911 trigger. Hope for otherwise is foolishness. Funny how the 1911 trigger is how all others tend to be judged, though.

The M&P is a good design. Versatile and probably will prove to be as tough as any. Remember, Glock was not so well received back in the day either. Speaking of Glock, I love the gun, but the people are crazy and stubborn. When the 21SF is your best effort in regard to flexibility and adaptability, you're crazy and stubborn. Even the smallest things that would help...they just won't do. Insane. And although yes, the design works...the ability to flex and change a few things is what will ultimately drive them down in the market. It will take a while, but while guns like the M&P and XD keep coming up and improving on things, it will eventually hurt the Glock badly.

Boomstick, right on. While the Glock was "perfected" in the 80's, this is 27 years later! The Glock could use a major redesign, not on the basics mind you, but come on Gaston. The super thick polymer, no adjustability in the grip, and use stainless mags man and you could make a slim gun-voila. The new MP blows the 21SF away in ergonomics. I was suspect, but man this thing is sweet.

Actually my K100 has a better box stock SA trigger {shorter reset, crisper break, similar pull weight} than my Springfield Loaded or just about all of the non custom or semi custom 1911s I've used, the better 1911's will beat it but OTOH its appearantly easy to improve the K100's trigger considerably. It IS possible, granted the 1911 trigger will remain the gold standard of comparison for a long time to come.
