SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Gun maker Smith & Wesson has landed a lucrative contract to supply the California Highway Patrol with nearly 10,000 hand guns over the next 18 months.
The law enforcement agency has ordered 9,700 of the Springfield company's stainless steel tactical pistols for current and future officers, the company said Monday.
The guns sell for about $850 each, making the order for the Smith & Wesson model 4006TSW weapons worth about $8 million.
The new pistols will be delivered over an 18-month period beginning in June and will replace earlier versions of the model 4006, which the California department officers have carried since 1990, Smith & Wesson said.
"They are an extremely high-profile department," company spokesman Paul Pluff said.
The pistol ordered by the California Highway Patrol is a heavy stainless steel model chambered for .40-caliber Smith & Wesson ammunition. Highway patrol officers often want a durable, long-lasting steel model of pistol instead of the newer plastic-frame versions, Pluff said.
Smith & Wesson announced earlier this month it had landed a deal to sell more than 1,000 plastic-framed 9 mm models to the Cincinnati Police Department.
