S&w Pc 329pd

My experience with mine is that shooting full house magnum loads even with the Pachs wasnt much fun at all. With reduced loads the gun is terrific. I have loaded a bunch of 240gr XTPs with 8gr(?) of AA2. They are stout (like a .357) but not punishing for one cylinder or so. It is a gun for people who like to tinker with their guns and ammo. It is not for someone looking for an off the shelf solution.

Thanks for the input. Sounds like I'm probably better off sticking with my Trail Boss.

This is a great thread and hopefully I can get a lead to those Pachmeyers decelerators.

I recently bought the 329PD and shot the same 240 gn Mag techs used with my other 44s and well I hate to be a big Nancy but although recoil wasn't terrible it did put a bite to the web of right hand.

I looked on the web this AM with no luck so if any one could get me to those decelerarors I would appreciate it.

Thanks for any help

Here is a link to Pachmayr's Web site. Click on "Grips", and look for "Gripper Decelerator". These are available from Web retailers like Cheaper Than Dirt, Cabela's, etc. - actually, they're often cheaper to order from retailers than from Pachmayr. Get the code for the grip you want from the Pachmayr Web site (e.g. N frame, round butt, is 05148; N frame, square butt, is 05056) and use that to order.

Highland Ranger,

I shoot my PC 329 some - mostly Proload's Tactical Lite and Silvertips. I've run through some full power 240grain and it hurts. I now have a pair of Craig Spegel boot grips on it, so it feels much better in the hand. I have a Tanker holster I use for the 3" 629 which fits it perfectly and have taken a few walks in the woods with it. It is noticably lighter than either the 629 or F-comp and that nice.

If I'm going to use it as a woods gun, I'd like to figure out a load that gets the 200 grain Gold Dot moving at about 1200fps.

Marshall,

As I noted in my previous posts, I have shot Silvertips out of my PC329. Its a pretty good load for such a light gun. About as much of a thump as I care for. However, I would prefer a bullet with more modern technology like a Gold Dot. Someday I'd like to work up a load that has a 200grain Gold Dot moving at about 1200fps. I figure that would be just right for that gun.

My carry load is a 240 gr XTP that I think/hope is going about 1000fps but I haven't chronographed it. It is manageable in the gun and should be lethal on anything short of tanks.

Rabbi,
Is that XTP a factory loading? I know that Hornady usually tunes their XTP bullets to higher velocities, so am wondering if a handloaded XTP will expand reliably at 1000 fps. Those ballistics sound pretty good for a SD load out of a lightweight 44 mag, if it performs as advertised. Thanks.

With a .44cal bullet I dont worry too much about expansion. My understanding is that underpenetration is a bigger problem since vitals are located deep in the body behind fat, bone and muscle. If it does expand, so much the better but I think max expansion is only supposed to be 1/2 again as inital diameter. Is a .66cal bullet any more effective than a .44? I dunno.

Decelerators

However, they are a clamshell design that affixes with a single screw thru the center. The result is the grip feels kind of loose. Definately not the snug fit of the Hogue's that come with the gun. A second screw would solve most of the issue, part of it is the texture of the rubber . . .

Not to hijack here, but I am glad to see a few other people a little displeased with the Decelerators. I have them on the 629 pictured here. Functionally they are great. Fit wise, and finish wise, they left a bit to be desired for the price. There is a sizeable gap between the frame and the grip (right side) and the two halves' seams did not line up as flush as I would've liked. Also, there were several spots of "flashing" left from when the grips were made. Some could be removed with my fingernail, others are just plain defects in the workmanship. Not really happy with Pach's quality control, though again, the grips do their job and are a vast improvement over the pair that came with the revolver.

Yes agreed, quality was marginal.

They do the job, but with a little more care they would be perfect. Charge me $10 more if you have to because gluing a round logo in a not round hole and getting glue outside the hole, not cleaning the edges of the cast piece, and a loose fit, etc - all unacceptable in a grip going on a $1000 gun.

But again, they do reduce felt recoil, especially taking the sharp edge off that backstrap hitting your hand.

I have a PC 629 as well, much longer barrel (odd size, 7 1/2" I think) - I would not bother putting them on that gun; it's heavy enough to manage recoil through its own mass.

With the short barrel the 629 might be a handful though . . . (which I guess is why you have them on yours)

How are these things holding up? I looked at one yesterday and it seemed like the black finish might be a little delicate.

I haven't been carrying it every day so not sure I can respond with the best information but it seems fairly durable.

I do have a wear spot where the trigger stop hits the frame (metal on metal) after a few hundred rounds. Other than that, no appreciable wear.

Patentmike,

I haven't been carrying mine much either. But I think the finish is the same as on my 340PD and that finish did wear after a stretch of pocket carry. Had it refinished in Roguard and it seems OK. Alas, any dark polymer spray on finish seems to show wear.

I've got pachmyr grips on my smith 29-5, this gun really barks with a 4 inch barrel and no porting. I'm not sure if the grips are the decelerators. They cover the backstrap and have a single screw in the middle of the grip. Is there any other way to tell?
