S&W: "Pinned and Recessed"

I can understand why "pinned" is a good thing but I'm not clear on "recessed". It doesn't appear to have a point other than allowing crud to build up in case rim recess.

It was to provide more support for the case head with the higher pressure magnum rounds.

Recessing, despite how pretty it is, was determined to be unnecessary. Hence its demise.

As others have said; the pin was in place to keep the barrel straight and prevent it from unscrewing. The recesses were there to give added support to the cartridge case head to handle the magnum pressures.

When P&R disappeared around 1983 it was viewed as a cheapening of the guns, and that was true. The P&R guns were generally better made that the post 1983 guns. Along those same thoughts pre WWII guns were considered better made than post war guns.

Collectors value any discontinued feature with a premium.

I will have to say I like the looks of a P&R gun better than the later ones.

Because it looks nicer, no over tightened barrels, less cartridge movement and rarer.
