My personal favorite for carry has, over the past several years, been the small S&W “J” framed model 340. The Scandium 340 rides very well in a pocket holster but I have found it even easier to carry with the Clip Draw device attached to it. At 21 feet I can keep even most magnum shots within the 8 ring of a normal bull’s-eye target. At 31 feet they begin to spread out and some are on the paper but off the target rings. I would like to be able to have all my shots hit a 10 inch target at 50 feet.

I then tried a model 640; all stainless steel and a 2.1 inch barrel.

It was easy to carry on the clip draw, shooting Magnum loads were easier, but the accuracy, while pretty good for a small revolver, provided no significant advantage over the light weight 340.

With that, I began looking for a Pro-60. This is a new revolver for Smith & Wesson this year and it took about 3 months to find one.
On the range, the Pro 60 handles Magnum ammunition very well. A few loads like the Speer Gold Dot 135 grain Short Barrel .357 Magnums and the 124 grain Remington Golden Sabre Hollow Point rounds are actually pleasant to shoot. These rounds have shown good accuracy along with the traditional Remington 125 grain semi-jacketed hollow point ammo and Speer’s 158 grain Gold Dot Hollow Points.

Thanks for the report. That must have been fun. :D

Reinforces the reason I like the M&P 340 as the ultimate pocket carry J Frame, IMO.

The Pro 60 is very cool looking. I like "the art deco" look. K frame is a very versatile package.
Too bad the ILS is not an (removable) option on the Pro Series.

You have any plans on reviewing the Night Guard .45. Let me know if you do I have always wanted a .45 revolver (not cowboy) and it might be just the ticket.

DAdams:

Thanks. The 340 is difficult to beat for concealed carry. I would prefer to have my Sig Revolution C3 with me at all times, but it is just not always possible. The 340 IS always possible.

The Pro 60 is still a J frame, but much easier to handle with full factory .357 Magnum ammo. The Speer GDHP and Remington Golden Sabre were very mild to shoot (for magnum loads).

As for a Night Guard. I would love to review one but I cannot find them in any caliber. Now that I have been in Minneapolis for about 9 months I have established a relationship with a couple of dealers similar to what I had in Boise where they now call me when they get something new in.

If you go back through my archieves, near the beginning you will find a couple of postings about the Scandium 325 PD with a 2.5 inch barrel. It was accurate (in fact a had one with a 4 inch barrel which I liquidated since it did not provide any more accuracy than the shorter barrel) but it was a handful to shoot. The wood Ahrens grips were not a good idea and I found that the Pachmayr compact grips provided the best compromise between recoil absorbtion and maintaining a concealable profile. Wisely, S&W has chosen to put them on the Night Guard.
