I sent my 686 (no dash) back to Smith & Wesson Monday for warranty work (recalled about 20 years ago). Prior to sending it back I called Smith and they sent me a shipping label so shipping was FREE. I received it back Friday (fixed) it now has a M stamped by the model number. I told Smith on the phone that I heard about this recall on a gun forum. This kind of service is FANTASTIC!!! Anyone else have dealings with Smith & Wesson lately? How was your service?

Yeah,

I bought a used M 19 made in 72 a little while back. While firing it the firing pin bushing pushed back into the frame allowing the primers to creep out and bind everything up.

I called Smith they said to drop it off, I can so I did, and they would check it out. They called me back and said it was Warrantee work. They then found they had no more of those bushings in stock. They were forced to make one to fit into my gun.

Total cost: 0

That is service.

I sent my Model 586 to S&W for the recall work last year and had it back 8 days later:) And they paid shipping both ways.

Most of what I've heard about their service lately has been very positive.

It was a long time ago, but I had a .38-44 that needed a new hand. I sent it back to S&W. By that time the old style hand was no longer being made, so they made a hand for that gun by drilling two holes in a new hand (in a part about .075" thick) and pinning and silver soldering a piece on. Then they finished the whole thing down perfectly. Absolutely incredible workmanship and the cost was - nothing. They said it was warranty work, even though the gun was 35 years old at the time and was police surplus.

Same on my new 642. All they had to do was clean a little crud out of the inside of the cylinder, but they paid all shipping and included a note that said "it has been our pleasure to serve you. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance to you." Awesome! I wrote them an email recently to express my satisfaction. Hopefully it finds the right people.

I bought a used Model 60 that needed some work on the lockwork (it would occasionally freeze during a DA stroke). It was fixed, free, and total time from door to door was eight days. You really can't ask for more.

Earlier this year I sent back a 945 to have a repair made and the service was as good as it gets. About the same time, I knew someone who sent in a PC revolver that the barrel was obviously out of time. They sent it back with a note saying that it was in "spec". Hard to think that "spec" on a "performance center" product would have a front sight that was obviously leaning to one side.

Thinking back over the many years I have dealt with S&W, service has generally been very good.
