I have a Shield 9mm and was thinking about extra magazines. I was thinking about what value there is in aftermarket magazines for range use. I was looking around and saw the clear plastic ETS mags and the 10 round pro mags as options. I wouldn’t consider them for carry mags when the S&W aren’t that pricey. The question is if the cheap ones are reliable enough to not be annoying at the range vs just buying more oem mags.

Now if I’d been smarter I’d have bought the 5 mag + 250 round PSA package in January, but ehh time makes fools of us all. Then I was lamenting paying $15 more for my Shield than the current offers. Now they’re going for $100+ more.

Shield magazines are going for 100 bucks a piece?

I would buy the aftermarket magazines for range use. Even if they're not reliable you get practice clearing malfunctions.

Yes it is the M&P Shield 9.

Pro-mags are the one people complain about but what tends to be the biggest problem? If it’s one bad load per 100 at the range it might be worth the $10 savings for a dedicated range mag vs the S&W.

That said, I’ll probably pick up the 8 round S&W for a spare when I pop into Academy next time.

If you buy some of the cheap after market that are metal you can often "fiddle with them" and get them to work well enough for the range. You have to have realistic expectations though. Often something like Promag will work, just work from day one. Often they will not. It's very hit and miss. So in times like this it "may" be harder to find some OEM. Just keep in mind the money spent on cheap after market "may" be wasted. So weigh the options. If you can find OEM at even twice the price they should last you a lifetime. If you just can not find OEM and you are willing to risk the price of after market, and or are willing to tinker with them? Maybe they will work.
