Which is a better weapon? All around? I am an avarage shooter like to big game hunt and shoot. I have a couple of hand guns like the Desert Eagle AE 50 cal, 1911 Belgum 9mm and a few others.

S&W probably about 10 to 1...if for no other reason that their customer service is so good. The 99 is really a Walther and I am not sure that they even make them anymore. S&W has bowed out on the 99 in favor of their own design, the M&P.

S&W's customer service is probably the best in the industry. The pay for shipping both ways etc.

I don't have direct experience with Taurus but have tons with S&W.

Taurus is often cited for its "spotty" customer service.

That said, the 24/7 line of pistols is a very well made line, that few people report having issues with.

The SW99 is the classic Walther P99, with slightly more american garb on it.

Both are good guns.

Decide if you want a DA/SA with a decocker or a manual thumb safety.

I would go with the SW99 for style, as I do find it a very attractive firearm.

I would feel confident with either one on my hip.

24/7 Is the Better made Gun of those two.

To date I have owned Five 24/7's one 9mm, two .40's and two .45's I still have the .45's. The 24/7 is an Extremely dependable line made by Taurus. All five guns and never a problem. The only complaint I have is with the 9mm version Ribber Grip. It is a Nice Grip, but it starts to peel a bit after one year. I really like the .45 version for its durability, and it shoots Absolutely every kind of round you can feed it. You did not mention Caliber. If you are looking for a 9mm I would get the New Taurus 809. The 809 is Hammer fired and You can get it at a Great Price. Also The SW-MP 9mm is by far a better Gun then the SW99. I have an MP 9mm and it is my second Best 9mm behind the two XD-M's I own. I do own the .45 version of the Taurus 809 [an 845] and it is Totally Awesome! Shoots Anything and is Very Accurate.

The Best to You and Yours!

I was looing for a .45 cal I to like the feel of the Taurus 24/7 OSS but I was afraid of the grips falling apart. As far as the SW99 the plastic or polymer grip doesn't look all that comfortable.
I wish I could hold one of each side by side, but everyone is out of every thing. I have been told by more than one dealer if you find what you are looking for grab it.
On the 24/7 grips falling apart what can you do about it? Does the .45 have the same grips as the 9mm? I have actually held a 24/7 9mm and I liked the way it felt.

I had a 45acp 24/7 pro and it didn't have the ribbed rubber grip. The gun was reliable and shot well but I had some other 45's I liked better so I sold it. Mark

The .45 has a better grip.

As railroader pointed out the .45 will never peel, it is a regular polymer grip, not the ribber grip.. I have had my 24/7 .45 for 3 years and it has been Great. Mine is not the OSS model which is even better. Can you order a gun where you buy? Then you do not have to settle for whats on hand. Check out the New Taurus PT 845 I have one and like it better then the 24/7. Great grip, Novak Sights and Hammer fired. Awesome!

The Best to You and Yours!

I wish I could check out the Taurus PT 845. It is getting so hard to find a weapon in stock. If I could hold each weapon and really check it out side by side the decision would be a lot easier. The gun stores are selling out as soon as they get it. That is why I am asking so many questions and I thank all of you for your advice and knowledge. I really liked the way the PT looked I will have to go around and find each weapon and see if I can hold and operate just short of fireing one.

I have both in .45ACP. I like the hand feel and ergonomics of the 24/7 OSS better than the P99. I hit better with the OSS because the trigger pull suits me better.

But if the P99 feels good in your hand, go for it. Its a great quality gun and S&W is the best there is for customer support. Spare mags for the P99 .45 can be a bit hard to find, and usually over priced if you do. They are 9 rounds vs. the Taurus' 12.

Here is a question. Everyone keeps saying that Smith and Wesson has the best customer support, but why do so many know this? Is it because they have to send their weapons in all the time? Or are they’re so many out there and they have been around so long that more people have experience with them.
