Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this.

I have a SW1911SC and I want to had extended slide release and thumb safety and night sights.

Do I need to send the gun back to S&W to do this in order to keep the life time warranty ?

Thanks,
J

I don't know their policy - you could call them up and ASK - but doubt they would care if you changed the sights. Monkeying around with the action to change safeties might be a different matter.

An extended slide stop is not a good idea, period. If you feel you just must, be prepared to take it off when you start getting unexplained slidelocks when not empty. Actually, an ambidextrous safety is not a good idea unless you are lefthanded and require it to get the gun going. The ambis are not as strong as standard.

I agree with Jim. Give them a call and get the answer from the horse's mouth. It will be much more reliable information that way.

Well I called and they said slide release and night sights can be installed by anyone but the thumb safety needs to be added by them to keep the warranty.

Officially, you lose the warranty. In reality they will service anything with their name stamped on it. If the problem is the result of your modifications or they need to replace your modified parts then you will be charged for the work.

For instance... if you are having extraction problems on a gun with an aftermarket trigger group they will happily fix the extractor or what have you because the problem is a result of the stock parts and work. If you have modified the extractor then they will charge you to fix it.

The reality is that they suck at fixing things and the gun usually needs to go back three or four times per issue.

Cool. Thanks for posting the follow-up information.
