I'm having a little issue with reassembly on my S&W1911. I took it apart to clean it last night and everything was going great until I went to put the slide back on. Whenever I would try to put in back, it would stick, like something was blocking it. Then when I finally got it back on, I couldn't get the slide stop to go back in. The hole wouldn't line up for anything. I finally got it back together, but it took forever. Have I just forgotten how to put a 1911 back together (it's been awhile) or is there some issue? I replaced the full length guide rod with a GI one. That's all that I have done to it.

Hard to say, but it sounds like the barrel link got flipped back the wrong way.

Try to keep it forward against the recoil spring plug when the slide goes on and it should go on and line up.

Is this an older model with a firing pin safety? If so, you'll need to avoid depressing the grip safety while reassembling the slide to the receiver.

^was thinking the same thing as the previous comment,

avoid pressing the grip safety as you put the slide back on, as you may notice it lifts a bar that pushes up on your slide's firing-pin-safety

as far as getting the slide stop through the link, it can take some jiggling and jostling. Once you have the slide-notch lined up, you can try jiggling just the barrel itself until the link hole lines up, sometimes works for me
