Today after cleaning, I reassembled from field strip and racked the slide to finish it up. After racking, the guide rod for the recoil spring was protuding quite a bit from the hole below the barrel. I re-stripped, put it back together fine, no issues, so I'm just curious - what in the world did I do the first time?

You most likely did not fully seat the guide rod head in the barrels assembly notch, instead putting it on the slide lock notch. This caused it to catch on the slide lock or frame.

People make that mistake all the time.

Sorry for the unsavviness - that'd be top notch instead of second notch? What happens there that makes the spring compress so much it lets the guide rod protrude that far when the slide is racked?

Thanks for the info

It is the half moon shaped notch on the bottom, if you're looking at the barrel upside down.

The reason it compresses so much is because of instead of going all the way into the recoil spring tunnel, it snags on the slide lock ("Takedown lever") or frame.
