I have a Springfield XDm 3.8 9mm with 5 19rd magazines. I just accepted a job back in my home town in California. From what I understand you cannot buy a gun in CA with a capacity of more than 10rds. Can I still bring mine since I bought it in Colorado?? Or do I need to stash away my hi-cap mags and buy some 10rd ones? Not looking forward to moving back especially since I just got my CCW and can not use it in CA.:banghead:

Thanks for the help!!

You're in luck, I live in California and I also bought a XDm. Yes you can bring you're xdm, before you cross state lines, make sure you completely disassemble your magazines. It is perfectly legal to bring In "parts kit" with you but not "high capacity" magazines. Within 60 days you send In a form to the DOJ voluntarily registering you gun along with a check for the amount of $19. Once you're here make sure to permanently block you mags to 10 rounds, or get ahead start and block them now. also, make sure to join calguns.net once you're in California. That is the best firearms related website in CA hands down. I wrote a thread on how i blocked my xdm mags, if interested let me know. Also, once you're here you'll find out how you can also buy xdm, gen4 glocks, and other guns not on the roster using the "single shot exemption". :).Its perfectly legal and that's how use Californians are buying all the good guns the rest of America is buying. Let me know if you have other questions.

blackhawk556 covered it.

You cannot bring the assembled "high capacity" magazines with you.
You need to block them at 10 rounds.
Bringing in standard capacity magazines is a serious crime.

When you arrive in California you need to fill out the form and pay money for the privilege of registering any handguns you have. The fee is per handgun.
These handguns then go into a database that LEO can see, and that is cross checked for prohibited persons automatically by software.
So if at any time you become prohibited, from say one of the numerous prohibiting misdemeanors, a felony, or other things in the future it will automatically red flag you as a bad guy known to have a gun. Armed and dangerous bad guy.
For an example take this current thread of a guy that become a prohibited person without committing a crime and was then red flagged by the system:

Additionally you cannot have your pistol barrel threaded. A semi-automatic pistol with a threaded barrel is an illegal 'assault weapon' in California, a felony subjecting you to up to 10 years in prison.

You are free to bring and register the gun with California, and then proceed to only use 10 round magazines with it, wasting most of the magazine space and having a larger grip than necessary for nothing.

Unlikely.
Most counties on the coast, where the majority of the population in the state lives, do not issue CCW to regular people just because they want to carry a gun.
The willingness to issue, policy, requirements, and restrictions on what and where it can be carried if you do obtain one, can change within a county as frequently as the Sheriff changes.
The majority of the state population lives in the Los Angeles basin, and the Bay Area around San Francisco. Most of the people and most of the jobs are there.
As you can see most of the counties in both locations do not issue to commoners and you need to live inland to be likely to obtain a CCW just because you want one like in other states.

Much of the northern third, as well as the eastern third of the state is national forest and national and state parks, with a rather sparse population outside of their borders.
So they look good on the map, but not many people live in most of them.

ventura county is actually getting sued right now because they refuse to release
"good cause" statement that have already been accepted. I'm pretty sure the sheriff is hiding something, I wouldn't be shocked if he only hands out ccws to his friends and campaign donors.
