All the egg spurts now say sabot slugs are only worth while in rifled barrels, yet the original BTI sabot slugs in the two part plastic sabot and the wasp waisted hollow base (filled with light material) slug where made for smooth bores and all the glowing early reviews were in smooth bores.

What happened?

Does anyone make a sabot type that still outperforms fosters and matches Bennekes from a smooth bore?

I note that some sabot rounds today are little more than rifle or pistol bullets of large caliber rather than the old wasp waisted long .50 projos of the early BTI and I believe Winchester version of the BTI. Does anyone still make that sort of slug?

Winchester still loads the old style sabots, they do seem to shoot fine from smoothbores. I have also had good results using "rifled" slugs in a rifled barrel, but I am no expert...
