What are your real world experience with them? I’ve had good groups/kills with a 21’ 870 Express with Remington rifled tube and 1 oz Federal Premium Hydra-Shoks but I’d like to hear from other sabot/rifled choke tube only users. I’d like to try Federal's 2 & ¾’ 3/4oz Barnes Expander (1900 fps!) for my son to use for Iowa Youth Deer season. Thought I’d pick some brains before I buy a bunch of ‘em. Thanks for your time.

the rifled choke tube in my 870 tightened up the groups only slightly with the standard Rem 1oz slugs but I had no success getting good groups with the sabots I tried. Until I'm ready to go with a fully rifled barrel I'm just using the same old slugs that have always worked.

Sabots and rfled choke tubes here haven't impressed me. That same tube with KO Brennekes or Winchester Forster style slugs does nicely. YMMV.

About the only absolute rule with slugs( or shotguns for that matter) is that there's no absolutes. Generally, sabots work best in fully rifled barrels of fast twist.

The upside, of course, is that there's no ineffective slugs for medium game. So,whatever groups best is your best choice.
