Over the summer I had a safe delivered to my weekend residence in the mountains. The day it was supposed to come me and 2 friends took off from work in order to get it into the house. Both I, and the company I bought the safe from, specified a small truck delivery due to the nature of the road my house is on. I also followed up with several phone calls. Well long story short (I'm leaving out all the lying BS) the moving company made us wait all day and at 7pm could not deliver the safe because they took a 48 foot Tractor trailer.

Needless to say I was very pissed. They told me they would take care of it and a day later they said they didn't have to do sh-t. So I ended up hiring a moving company who for $250 (no steps,no bolting) and with my help, delivered it into my room.

Now I'm getting another safe from a different company delivered to my residence in NYC. They were supposed to deliver it yesterday. I took off several hours from work and guess what, their driver didn't show up on time to work (they gave me several different reasons why this happened.)

Both before and after this happened I looked into getting a moving/rigging company or locksmith to deliver the safe. The two that called me back, I called at least 6, wanted $1200 and $650 to bring it up to my apt! Needless to say I'm not paying that kind of money for a 620lb safe!

So as of now I have another delivery scheduled for Wed morning(the earliest they could do it) with a company I don't trust. I'm going to be really pissed if I have to waste some more vacation time for nothing...

Sorry to hear about your dilemma. This is the best moving company I have ever dealt with...but they are not cheap and I don't know if they will do work in NYC. If you are taking time off work and there is the possibility of the safe not arriving maybe weigh the true cost of your time and frustration against the cost of getting a really good company to help you with the move. Good luck.

Who did you buy the safes from?

We hear about this all of the time from the online "safe companies" that are selling safes cheaper than everybody else. Part of that low price is that they auction the shipping to the lowest bidder. Combine somebody who isn't making enough off the sale to offer any real customer service, and a shipping company that's bringing it out for a rock bottom price, and you're not going to get much satisfaction.

You can always run into issues when shipping. I've never had a customer with a problem that I couldn't personally take the time to make a call and resolve.

As far as third party companies that move safes, anybody anywhere near NYC will pay more than anywhere else in the country. NYC companies have the highest prices we have ever seen anywhere.

Thanks CTGunner, I'll give them a try.

a1abdj It's a Brown Safe.

I went to the Biggest safe dealer in Manhattan and the only thing that impressed me were their most expensive safes. They basically tell you their B Rated safes are not recommended for anything of value and to tell you the truth they looked very poorly made (the B rated ones.) They bragged that their safes were not made in China. When I asked them where they were made the answer was India!

Regardless their prices were way expensive, as I am sure all my local dealers are, so I thought Brown was a good alternative.

Just dealing with these moving companies is crazy. They won't even call you back if they won't be making thousands...

I would like to hear what you think about it when it arrives. I wasn't really impressed with the Browns that I have seen, but that was a few years ago.

I also wouldn't hesitate to get on the phone with Brown themselves. I'm assuming they choose the shipping company, and a phone call from them will carry more weight than a phone call from you.

They are speaking the truth when it comes to insurance companies and commercial use of the safe. It's rare to find somebody who speaks the truth.

I don't understand why everybody gets so worked up over where a safe is made. There are good safes and bad safes built all over the world. As you saw, India apparently makes some bad safes, but that doesn't mean that all safes made in India are bad.

I can't tell you how many customers come to me and demand a US made safe when nothing they are wearing is made in the US, their car is an import, and everything in their house is imported (except the new safe).

Just dealing with these moving companies is crazy. They won't even call you back if they won't be making thousands...

I'm currently running a few days behind on local calls, but only because we have been that busy. Can't speak for the local guys, but we're certainly not sitting around waiting for the phone to ring.

If you can't get anybody to help you, let me know. I may be able to point you towards some local safe companies that you haven't contacted yet that would be capable of moving the safe for you.

Hey BTN - I just looked at Gentle Giant's website and it looks like they are now operating out of NYC. When I used them I don't think they were. Like I said, they are not cheap..I think I paid about 180 per hour (not in NYC though) for 3 guys. They were exceptional movers. While I didn't have them move a safe, there was no doubt in my mind that they could do that. The crew chief was a college grad. They were all exceptionally polite, well spoken, and possibly the hardest workers I have ever dealt with.

If you go online and read customer testimonies I think you will find the biggest complaint people have is that they are on the high end of the cost spectrum. I used bad movers once (lowest price guys) and that was a mistake I will never make again. It's the old you get what you pay for deal.

I bought a Sturdy for my country house where all my long guns are. The Brown is for my Apt in Manhattan and is in a smaller size that Sturdy doesn't make. Where in NYC do you live? House or apt?

Also just received another quote to move the safe up into my apt, $730 without bolting. ! And the guy acted like he was doing me a favor.

$730.00!!!!!!!!
For a 620 pound gun safe...
Are they having to use several flights of stairs??
If not and there is an elevator I would rent myself a pallet jack or buy one if necessary and get a little help from my friends and wash my hands clean of these over priced leeches.

No stairs and no bolting! Just into an elevator and 10 feet into my apt. FYI I will do the bolting.

The problem with using friends is that the moving company uses a range of time, which isn't even guaranteed. I can't ask friends to take a full day off of work for a delivery that may not even happen. That was my experience over the summer.

He's in Manhattan. Everything is super expensive there. Real estate, parking, and even safe moving. People like you, and even myself, would consider that high where we live. It's "normal" there.

The person at gentle giant was very nice but they wanted $750 since they are about 15 miles north of me.

I like the Brown. I got a B rated 6018 and I feel it was a good value for what it is. The outside of the safe is what I expected, and the inside is actually much nicer then I thought it would be, since they used very nice, plush lining.

Comparing it to the Sturdy is like comparing apples to oranges. If you are looking for a big safe for long guns the Sturdy will be cheaper. And the quality and build of the Sturdy is excellent.

You still haven't said what you'll be storing in it...

Btn,

Congrats on the new Brown Safe. They look like they make nice Safes although I've never seen one in person.

I'm curious: What would you use a gun safe for in NYC?

Hand guns, mostly. I believe you can store long rifles if you have a hunting license which requires a course. I got the Brown burglary safe for the city since it's just holding hand guns and other valuables. I got the Sturdy for my country place where all my long guns are.

Also if you have 5 or more hand guns you need to prove that you have a safe to store them in.

Damn!!
You have to prove you have a place to store them?????
What's wrong with just inside the confines of your locked home??
Does NYC specify that you must own a safe for this many handguns?
Please understand I am from firearms friendly Texas and these kind of posts always perplex me.
I am being serious here.

Yep, on your fifth gun you must send a picture to one police plz. In manhattan of the safe(that you must buy) where they will be stored---thats a must or you will be denied.----but hay---safety first
