My apologies if this has been covered before, but is it safe to dry fire a S&W Centennial, specifically a 642 and 442? Also, is it OK to stack the trigger during slow fire or will this cause any damage? Thanks.

The S&W owners manual says that it is ok to dry fire any of their firearms except for rim fires. I have a 642 and have dry fired it ALOT. No damage thus far. I am sorry, I do not know what "stacking" a trigger means.

Stacking the trigger refers to pulling back until the last point of pressure before the hammer is released.

Snap caps are inexpensive insurance, but you don't have to use them to safely dry fire a S&W centerfire.

Staging the trigger will not harm anything.

thanks for the explanation tecolote. i had never heard it called stacking before. i don't think it would hurt your 642.

not to hi jack this thread, but has any one noticed that after few hundred rounds there is a small scratch on the trigger guard where it looks like the trigger has been hitting? i just want to make sure it is a scratch and not a crack.

md7,

I probably used the wrong terminology. JoeHatley's post reminded me that "staging" is the right term.

Do you mean the area behind the trigger? It's normal to see wear in that area where the trigger contacts the frame when you pull the trigger.

tecolote,

yeah, i just read your reply on the 642 club thread. thanks by the way. glad to know it is just normal wear and tear. other than that my 642 is pretty much flawless.
