From a DOJ study that looked at shootings for the yrs 2000 - 2004 for the FBI, DEA, ATF, and US Marshals:

267 shootings:

105 during "enforcement operations"
60 intentional discharges at animals
14 unintentional discharges during enforcement ops
88 unintentional discharges during non enforcement activities

One third/33% of their total shootings were unintentional.

About one in eight during ops were unintentional.

Nobody can be too careful? ;)

That should probably read "14 REPORTED unintentional discharges..." You can probably Google for five minutes and find more than 14 newspaper articles of negligent discharges.

One night a couple years ago I heard a park ranger scream "SHOTS FIRED!!" on my scanner radio. The police came, full lights and sirens and cordoned the area. After a few hours of searching, waking the neighbors to ask if they saw anyone, etc., it was determined that the shot fired came from the OFFICER's gun.

His handgun was one round short and oh, wouldn't you know, the empty shell casing sitting on the truck floor!
