I have a 16" barrel Saiga in .308 that has an impressive muzzle blast and flash. I've been considering a flash suppressor for some time now, but recently, I've begun looking into the possibility of a sound suppressor.

The flash suppressor that I've been oggling is the Noveske KX3. This appears to work by redirecting the flash and to some extent the sound of the blast toward the front of the rifle. It is nice and compact as well. But at the same time, the flash and blast are still going to be present, just redirected. It seems that it would go from being obnoxiously loud to just plain old loud.

The suppressor I've been looking at is the Yankee Hill Phantom 7.62. With this setup, I'd have a flash suppressor even when the suppressor is not attached and I likely could get away with just earplugs or less at the range even with full-powered ammo. But even with the 16" barrel, the overall length after attaching the suppressor would be over 24" and the rifle is already muzzle-heavy as it is. Also, it is , of course, an NFA item and this would be my first foray into NFA-controlled items.

Finally, in researching these, I've also found that both seem to put not insignificant back-pressure on the action and can affect how the rifle cycles. I've seen recommendations to install adjustable gas valves to semi-auto rifles but I don't know if any such animal exists for the Saiga .308.

I'd like to get some recommendations from the folks here. What are your thoughts on the matter? Should I go with the KX3, a sound suppressor, or should I just stick with a run-of-the-mill flash suppressor? If the KX3 or sound suppressor, what modifications would be required to keep the action cycling reliably with full-powered ammo without risking damage to the rifle?

Thanks in advance,
Barrett

i would think that the short bbl 308, would really eat up a sound surp. I would see if you can put a nice flash surp on it.
Ive got a Phantom flash surp, on by plr 16, with a 12 inch bbl, and it really helps big time.

I have a Dragunov 3" flash supressor threaded on my S-308. I also have a AK-74-style muzzle brake. Of the both, I prefer the flash supressor.

I also considered a noise supressor for mine-- just for the heck of it. However, it is my understanding that you're still going to get a pretty loud rifle just from the operating system of a Kalishnakov. I know that isn't what you are worried about, but thought I'd toss it in.

John, I've seen the pictures of your flash suppressor and it looks good. And yeah, I realize it's still going to be loud. The 16" barrel really makes the 308 obnoxious and basically I'm just looking to be able to ditch the earmuffs while shooting it as they really get in the way. With just plugs, I get a headache pretty quickly unless I switch out with other guns between every couple of mags.

Basically, what I'm looking for is an accessory for a range toy. The Saiga is my only (functioning) semi-auto rifle and I've spent quite a bit of time, effort, and money to make it fit me. And I'd really like to make sure I'm not going to flush another $150-$800 down the drain with useless/damaging-to-the-rifle accessories.

Thanks,
Barrett

Barrett,

Thanks... and oh man, if you get a noise supessor, you just HAVE to give us a range report.

I'm in the same boat as you are. I've been shooting since I was 7 years old. Back then, no one really talked about hearing protection and I don't really think I gave it much thought until I was out of high school. At 36 now, I would guess that I have 40-50% hearing loss in my left ear. I've been doing a LOT of thinking about supressors these days.

Well, I've decided that since I know I'm going to get a flash suppressor at the very least, I'm going to go ahead with getting the barrel threaded. Most likely I'll break down and get the KX3 since it is threaded the same as the other flash hiders I've been looking at as well as the phantom system.

I'll go ahead and try that out and probably just go ahead and save up for the Phantom suppressor system. If it doesn't work well on the Saiga, I'll switch it to one of my bolt guns.

Thanks for the input.

Once you start shooting suppressed rifles, it's hard to go back. However, there are some downsides:

* not quite quiet enough to run zero earpro. I usually wear plugs anyway.

* extra length to rifle, typically 6-8".

* extra weight ( 1.5 - 2 lbs for a typical steel 308 suppressor) hung on end of barrel screws up balance for anything but an SBR.

* sound suppressors basically convert sound into heat. If you like to shoot a lot of rounds, the suppressor is going to get VERY HOT. It'll melt things, burn any flesh it touches, and produce mirage which will be visible through a magnified optic.

* sound suppressors increase backpressure. once you pop a few rounds through it, gas will be pushing back down the barrel. On a semi-auto, expect gas to seep out any path, including the open breech during cycling. If you crank off a bunch of rounds, it'll sting your eyes and smell bad.

If you just want some muzzle device, you could use a Smith Vortex flash hider. It's a lot smaller than the KX3 (which is really designed to redirect blast forward, not suppress flash, for use in CQB with SBRs).
