Howdy all,
Just bought a Saiga rifle in 308.
Do any of you have them? and what do you think?
Thanks

From what I've seen they are a good start. Most end up putting different furniture and US made parts count so they can go hi cap etc etc on them. They are accurate enough for what they are and should be quite reliable.

Some will say that you have to convert it. Others will say that they don't find it to be necessary. I say shoot it first and decide for yourself. If you decide to convert it don't hesitate as the process is simple (with the right tools and basic skills) and relatively inexpensive.

excellent with any good milsurp ammo, s. african was very consistent, though not the smallest groups , but very few flyers. S. American Nazi stuff was excellent as well, Chile, Venezuelan, Argentine, like that. Avoid Indian at all costs. Any of the former british empire, except indian is very good. Australian, American, N. Zealand, singapore, like that as well. Also canadian.

good rifle, terrible stock sights. I'm replacing mine with techsights' new AK aperture style iron sights.
Those are compatible with the Saiga? Any other mods need to be done before the work?

I have those for my 10/22 and like them a lot.

I honestly have to take offense to people saying the AK stock sights are awful, given that I managed to drill a javelina on the run with a snapshot, exactly in the right place, with my converted Saiga .223 from 50 yards or so. Seriously, don't go there. Granted, you may be able to improve upon the AK's stock sights, but they're far from being terrible.

They ARE awful. Incredibly short sight radius, very course adjustments, and relatively vague alignment of front post within the rear notch. One shot on a moving target at 50 yards does not prove they are good, just that they are serviceable.

edit;
Those are compatible with the Saiga? Any other mods need to be done before the work?

Far as I know, no other mods need be done, and the Tech-Sight installation can be completely reversed so you can put the rifle back into original configuration if need-be.

never done anything with mine other than put it in my safe, but the disclaimer on the box tells you that adding hi cap mags will make it noncompliant, I put it back in my safe and am gonna sell it, got too many black rifles I do know about.

mmm... love the woodies, wish they would done one with the short bbl. on those long bbls, what types of groups are you getting?

actually 70's Indian is OK. it was manufactured under British Supervision. 80' and 90's Indian should be avoided like the plague.

sorry to hijack the thread

I'll agree with that Chauncey, IF you can deff tell, you have 70's made india. Like I said, former British empire made stuff?? Like Campbell's soup...

Having a blast with my S308. Its shooting 2MOA with Silver Bear, 3+MOA with Wolf Perf. The conversion took about 5 hours but next one shouldnt take half that. Franky all things considered Im getting as much accuracy from the Saiga that I get from some M1As I borrowed at half the price after conversion.

I used a Scout Mount and a 4x scout scope to be rid of the irons although the mount has a set of irons as backup. Love this rifle its a hell of a MBR.

You know of course you can make it compliant by swapping out a few cheap parts to made in USA parts. Saigas are more for the DIY crowd, people who are wiling to deal with a diamond in the rough.

Here's mine, just posted it in the camo rifle pics thread.

I had the barrel fluted and threaded, pic shows a Phantom comp on it but now I have one of the new Primary Weapon Systems FSC47 comps on it. Trigger got a nice polish job and is pretty smooth now, did the Tubbs Final Finish on the barrel which honestly shrunk my groups by probably 20% ... I have shot sub 1" groups at 100 yards with 168gr Matchking handloads, but it averages probably 1.2 - 1.3" with those loads. Also put an extra power Wolff recoil spring on which made recoil softer, but needs full power loads to cycle now.

A lot of work went into this rifle, but the results were worth it. It shoots better now than I ever thought it would. The only reliability problems came from the 20rd FBMG mags, once I smoothed up the insides of the mags they run 100% now.

Sorry, I don't do this forum as much anymore.

3moa with average ammo.
1.5" with good stuff.
Scoped.

That, my friend, is one of the best cammo jobs I have ever seen.
It looks like sky, dirt, a puzzle, and ABC gum, all at the same time.(Allready Been Chewed). I have kept mine stock, and have cammo tape wrapped all around them, and they look pretty nice, but now I am going to convert them.

I have added Blackjack buffers to them. Oh and MoJo peep sites to them, as well as bright orange front site posts. I am not convinced on the mojo peep sites yet... Oh they do make a big diff, in fast target acquisition, and that would work great inside of 50 yards, but any distance longer than that???
Well, I have to do some further testing, to see if I am going to like them for accuracy as well. Right now? I must say I do not, but I only have 1 workout with them so far. also I think they are made to one certain type standard, made to fit a million diff types of ak's, so I think I need to dremel the bottom of the plate, for the one that sits on my 762.39; it is not sitting flatly on the site deck right now, which is bumming me out.
I also put them in a s.s. trough, and bathed them in Sweetshooters for a week, then soaked for a week in Synthetic
motor oil, and lastly , did a molyfusion job, on the bores of all my Saigas.
They pretty much sweat themselves, to a shiny , black, and clean state, all by themselves, if I just stare at them long enough, after a range trip.

again, very fine cammo work...
