I have a converted Saiga AK in x39.

recently, I have been thinking about swapping the sporter handguard for the traditional kind (probably the stuff and retainer from Dinzag).

Would the Saiga gas tube have to be replaced in order for traditional handguards to fit?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. Dinzag offers a replacement gas tube as well.

I just wish the bolt-on handguard retainers weren't so damn expensive. If they were $50 I'd probably change out my handguards in a heartbeat.

I just wish it wasnt expensive. Period. It's 170 bucks for the retainer, gas tube, and furniture. Sheesh.

It's much cheaper than having your rifle sent out to have a standard lower handguard retainer fitted.

It's also got a big plus going for it, since you can 'mix-n-match' it to any of your Saiga rifles.

I was looking at a gas tube on TickBite Supply that has a vented whield over t he top of it instead of an upper handguard. I'm thinking of going that route instead, with just a lower handguard and one of Dinzags lower retainers...as soon as I can scrape up 100 beans for the retainer.

This is a .223 Tromix Saiga where I replaced the Saiga handguard with a Bulgarian lower handguard and an Ultimak rail on the top. There is a Dinzag plate holding the lower handguard. Yes, the Dinzag plate and hanguard and everything else is not cheap. Once you go this far down the road of converting Saigas to something more like an AKM configuration, it is going to get expensive.
