... and can't wait to get to the range! A magazine conversion was made so the rifle will take standard AK mags - a weld ridge dremeled into a feed ramp and mag release tweak. Also a compensator was installed. This rifle came from Izhmash with no threads nor any muzzle device.

The comp is a version of a AK-103 break made by the gunsmith himself. It's parkerized and sits on standard left hand AK threads. Next, off to BR-tuote for a suppressor... ;) :D

The magazine is an Exel-made Sako/Valmet late 80's waffle. Notice the nice contrast of the OD against the black Russian furniture. I got a bunch of these mags from the army's depot store, they're used and come in different varieties... steel, polymer, some honestly green and some OD. Most work, I found one so far that won't. For eight € the damage isn't that big. Pity they won't sell the current, all black Sako waffle mags... they're available elsewhere but will cost over double that much. OTOH, they work 100%.

Why the conversion, then? Mag price and availability. I can sell the two 30-rd Saiga originals I got delivered for 30€ apiece... :scrutiny: :uhoh: :p

The gunsmith also volunteered to re-fit the gas piston tube. He said he'll do that to any AK variant that has a tightly fitting one - fitting the tube loose so that it has close to 1 mm play will let the barrel vibrate more freely according to him. I'll find out soon enough.

Nice! Looks like any Russian Spec-Ops group would be proud to carry that one.

Looking forward to the range report...

Question: Is the pistol grip original-from-the-factory on that one? Saiga's imported into the US don't have them, they've been "sporterized" into a traditional rifle stock.

They did a decent job of it, unlike the awful Robinson Arms California Legal M96 :)what:) but I'd not mind getting hold of a normal pattern Saiga.
