Saiga Barrel Twist .223

Posting late, just got back in.

Today I was at the range with friends and I decided it was time to check out the PPU 75 Grain Match ammo from Prvi Partisan. I loaded five rounds into my saiga, after warming up with a five rounds of 62 grain silver bear, and fired at a new target 100 yards away.

The group was easily twice as large as the silver bear.

I was thinking that perhaps the rate of twise in the saiga barrel wasn't enough to stabalize the longer rounds.

So what exactly is the barrel twist on Saigas? Is 62ish grain ammo the best I assume?

You can check it. Put a tight fitting patch on your cleaning rod. Make a mark on the top of the rod. Push or pull it thru. When the mark gets back to the same place , measure the distance it traveled.
This will tell you what twist rate you have.
75 grain bullets are gonna want a fast twist. 1-8 , 1-7" ......
Maybe a 1-9 " but I would guess that may be boarder line.

they make them, either 1/7 or 1/9, I don't remember which...

Thanks for the input guys.

I'll take them out again sometime this week and see what I can do with them. I was expecting a little better accuracy than what I was getting. If the gun shoots Silver bear better then that "match" ammo really isn't worth it.

Different rifles have different tastes, and accuracy will vary by load. FWIW, if the bullets were not stabilized, they would likely have keyholed by the time they got to the 100yd target.

I believe that the 223 Saiga's were all supposed to have 1:9" twist. You can always ask the importer: http://www.raacfirearms.com/contact.htm

Saiga .223 1:10

accourding to this Saiga-12 forum they use a 1:10 twist. I have contact RAA to check on that.
