I'm rather confused as to what it takes to modify a Saiga rifle to use commonly available hi-cap magazines. I've heard you can simply use Galil magazines in the 5.56 Saiga without modification. Is this true? Do the rifles need just a piece of pipe to raise the feed ramp, or is drilling necessary? I guess I've seen a lot of methods, and not being a very mechanical person, I don't understand just what is needed for each caliber.

So, can anyone point me in the right direction, or perhaps explain how to do it themselves? I'd be interested in both learning how to do it for both 7.62x39 and 5.56x45, and perhaps even 5.45x39.

Also, is there anything that must be done to the rifle so that it remains legal if one just wants to allow use of hi-cap magazines?

you can either get E. german Weiger mags, which take about 5 min. to modify with a Dremel, or do the feed ramp thing, which will then let you use either saiga or other mags as well. go to the above listed sight, and you can find Dinzag , and a couple others who sell the feed ramp assy.

All non-Saiga mag options require a feed ramp installed. It is more convenient to mod the rifles mag latch, because this give you the ability to use any AK magazine (and not just the ones you've modified).

Yes, Galil orlite mags work with minimal modification to the mag, and only a feed ramp needed in the rifle.

http://forum.saiga-12.com has answers about Saigas you've not even thought of yet. . .
