Sako Finnlight vs Winchester Extreme Weather

The Sako model 85 Finnlight comes in three barrel lengths:

S / 515 mm (20.27")
SM, L / 620 mm (24.40")
M / 570 mm (22.44")

With a 22 inch barrel the 6.5x55mm does just fine without the need to push pressures.
I have a model 70 featherweight in 6.5x55mm that has a 22 inch barrel. Here are some of my load experiments.

Can you even get the Extreme Weather? Been awfully hard to find recently, with the Winchester assembly moving to Portugal. I've been looking for one in .308 for months now with no joy.

No doubt, I have also been looking for a Win EW 7mm Rem Mag for over a year and they are virtually impossible to find. I have basically given up.

Let me know if anyone has any bright ideas as far as locating one.

Yeah, the 20" barrel on the Sako is a turnoff. If I wanted a carbine, I'd tote a lever rifle.
My 16" barrel swede sporter with 159 grain Normas must be doing something wrong, tiny groups you can cover with a quarter at 150 yards and dead deer everytime it goes hunting.

Sako85 in 6,5x55 here. Looked at a lot of options before I chose it and it came down to a choice between Sako and Tikka.

The Tikka price was about 65% that of the Sako, but it's probably 80% as good. This makes Tikkas excellent value in comparison. But value isn't everything I'm looking for in a rifle, especially as it's something I will probably never part with...

So I chose the best quality rifle out of the two, the rifle that felt "more" when shouldered, the rifle with solid metal magazines, metal trigger guard, 3 bolt lugs, etc.

But one negative to the Sako is if you need to extend the LOP - the butt plate is a complete pain to remove....

Good luck!

I've owned more sakos than rem and win and yes, the sakos are well made but a bit overrated too. I think they are a little bit pricy. But I like the simplicity of the americans and the aftermarket. I also doesnt like the integral bases on sako. The bases are conical and the finish rifleingeneers must been drunk in the sauna when they come up with that idea.

My local GS has the EW in 308 & 270 . I didn't really like the feel of the Bell & Carson stock . The grip area was thicker than I like . It didn't feel hollow though and I liked that and the texture .

I like the feel of the Tika, but the stock felt cheap like most synthetic stocks .

I also like the feel of the Browning xbolt , but I am not sure how well that rubber stock would hold up .

I have a Sako Finnlight in 6.5x55 and love it, so far have killed seven hogs and one Barbary Sheep with it, all with factory ammo.

I have had both. The Winchester EW in 270 WSM and the finnlight in .243.

The Sako had the better action/barrel. Was not impressed with the cheap injection molded stock however, especially on something with a prestige such as Sako.
One note on the Sako was it had a long throat and seating bullets as far as the mag allowed didn't even come close to the lands. Still exceptional accuracy however.

The winchester wasn't quite as smooth as the Sako, but the stock was heads and tails better than the Sako. I'm a fan of the CRF, so that was a plus as well.

Accuracy between both was a toss-up, both exceptional. Performing with handloads at a consistent half Moa out to 300 yards.

I've sold both, and I regret selling the Winchester.

I'm planning on buying within the next year 2 extreme weathers and 1 Sako greywolf. I would not recommend the finnlight, the hunter syn/ss is a better choice IMO if you want a synthetic Sako.

Personally, I'd take the M70 EW and spend the savings on better glass. These new M70's are great rifles. I have no experience shooting Sako rifles though, only handling them though. they are nice rifles for sure. If I'd won that mega millions jackpot I''m sure I'd buy a few Sako rifles though...

EchoM70, I think you're referring to the original cheap Finnlight stocks, current production stocks are very nice.

Paul 7, it was a 02-03 production Sako 75 finnlight. I haven't held any of the Sako 85 finnlight rifles but the stocks seem to look exactly the same as the 75 I had, however I could be wrong.
