Well, for the first time in a long time, I'm heading back to Texas!!! After completing my "business" requirements, I want to have some serious fun time. That sounds like a good excuse to go to a range, and to seek-out a cigar-friendly steak house! I never really needed an excuse for the range :D or for high quality, cigar-friendly steak house, but “being in town” is as good of an excuse as any I can imagine.

So, where in San Antonio's (prefer north side) is there a quality shooting facility? If it's an indoors, no hokey limitations on the number of rounds in the magazine, etc like some in Michigan.

After I go back wash up, change I'm ready for a steak and a Double Corona! Re: steak houses, I've heard the name "Sawgrass"?! All feedback appreciated!

Not sure about ranges but I just ate at Flemings in the Quarry Market and that 22oz bone in ribeye was awesome. I would also recommend possibly eating at the Tower of Americas. It's downtown by our office. Can't miss it. It's the restuarant on top of the Space needle, 1 of 5 in the world I think. It's about 700ft high.

I have spent a lot of money and had a lot of fun at the ranges in SA, with your requirment of being northside SA

www.texasthunderrange.com northwest SA Bandera and Loop 410 indoor range

www.brackenrange.com Bracken Range is located North SA outdoor range
2 miles north of Rolling Oaks Mall
off of Nacogdoches Road
in Northeast San Antonio
at:

19140 Marbach Lane

From a Local

I prefer Bracken Range. SaltGrass is a chain. Fleming's, is the the "F" from PF Chang's, the Steakhouse by the same guy behind PF Changs. I think their meat is OK, but their sides are great. I still feel the best Steak in town is at Morton's of Chicago on the Riverwalk. I'd recommend going to a a place that is not a full on SteakHouse but still ordering a steak. 2 local places that both cook killer ribeyes are Silo (either location) or Biga on the Banks (on the Riverwalk). The Alamo Heights location of Silo has a killer bar downstairs as well.

There is always Ruth Chris - two in town. For ranges on the north side - depends how far you want to drive - Dietz on 46 off 281, Cedar Ridge on 1863off 281 which is a little closer in but both are a fair drive.

SW side - Bullethole and Blackhawk. Texas Thunder is an expensive short indoor pistol range. I don't know if they do one day visits. They seem to be about membership.

Bass Pro on IH-10 has an indoor range.

A general area faq is at www.krtraining.com - might want to see if there is a fun match in town. There is usually something each weekend.

+1 on Flemings, I ate at the one in Houston last week and it was, as usual, very good. Big difference in price, and atmosphere between them and the TL&C/Saltgrass type chains. Be sure to order the mac and cheese at Flemings if you can it is one of their specialties.

I simply ate at the HardRock when I was in SA last weekend... I needed a wheelbarrow to leave the place I ate so much!

Then we hunted down in Crystal City... My third time hunting in my life and all were there.

I've been to just about every steakhouse in Texas and my favorite so far to date is the Saltgrass. I usually get either the T-Bone or the Medallions. I do like the Texas Land and Cattle, they are my second choice.

I've even had a $1300 dinner at Ruth's Chris but still didn't compare to my dinner at the Salt Grass.

As far as the range goes, I'll have to let the locals speak for that.

Oh yeah

Mesquite grilled quail are very very tasty. The riverwalk is kinda touristy, but still neat. That may be your best bet for a cigar, having out door seating.

Holy crap...I forgot to follow this post up with feedback from my experience!

Well, here I sit back in Miechiga(n)!!! You probably won't catch the double meaning of that word, but is expresses serious disillusion! Oh man...San Antonio was awesome!!! I think I left my heart there...in fact, I know I did!!! Maybe I should put out a reward for it. Maybe I should get back there, get the job and stay, content for life. So, regarding folks' suggestions:

The river walk...left me speechless!

Saltgrass...dang, now that 22 ounce steak almost filled-me up. The baked potato and sour creme and butter was almost big enough, and the bread!!! Service was as good as the food!!!

The Bullet Hole...It was nice. Any day shooting is nice. Met a lot of really nice people there. Wish I had shot steel instead of paper. I think some of the shootists may have found me odd, engaging in double-tap, point shooting while they (most), were doing smallest precision groups possible. Oh well, to each his/her own. Besides, my pistol doesn't even have iron sights...plain, smooth top to the slide.

The people in San Antonio...well, the people were really good to me! Not one single person was openly rude to me, and forget about the drivers. Detroit looks like Hell on earth for drivers now after S.A. courteous ones.

I could really get into living in S.A. There is just one thing that holds me back, and that part remains completely outside of my control. I can only say God willing and the creek don't rise, the way there will become available. Thanks for the suggestions all! I had a heck of a fun and productive weekend in San Antonio!!

Glad it went well.

BTW, Texas Monthly just rated the steak houses in Texas and put Bohanan's at number 2!

Kind of pricey for me though and we do go to Saltgrass. But it is raining and today's match is cancelled. So I will take a nap and avoid chores.

Glad you were treated well in our city, Doc. I caught your thread too late to offer some suggestions, but, +1 on SaltGrass and Bullethole. Bullethole is my preferred outside range as well....member since '05, took my CHL course there also. Great, friendly, knowledgeable folks.

Wanting to move

You guys are making me homesick for SA. Between basic training and tech school, I spent 1-1/2 years at Lackland AFB. My next door neighbors are from SA, and she has told me numerous times that as soon as the kids get out of high school they will move back there.

I do a lot of gardening (and shooting rabbits in my garden) and here in Zone 7B the winters are just too harsh. My daughter wants me to move to north Florida, but thinking about SA after reading this thread makes me think of another option.

Bracken Range is the closest range to the Northside (well, far northside that is). I live just a couple miles from it. That said, I usually drive right by Bracken every weekend and go to Dietz instead... farther but way cheaper....
