San Diego shooting area to be closed!

Dear Interested Party,

On October 11, 2006, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Palm
Springs-South Coast Field Office and the U.S.D.A. Forest Service,
Cleveland National Forest, Palomar Ranger District are jointly releasing environmental assessments (EAs) proposing to permanently close the High Point area to target shooting. The area is located east of Temecula, CA., along High point Road (8S05) and State Route 79.

Public comments on the EAs are due 30 calendar days from the date the
legal notice is published. The legal notice will be published on October 11, 2006 in the San Diego Union Tribune. Public comment must be received or postmarked by November 9, 2006.

It appears, from the CNF web site, that they only plan to permanently close the part that's been closed already, and keep the other areas open.

It was never a good or safe place, IMO, due to a near total lack of backstops that facilitated shooting away from the road, but we've lost too many plinking spots.

Yes, we're quite aware that it sucks. We are working to fix it.
We've all heard "just move!" before. Some of us have jobs, and families, etc.

Yeah, but Florida has crappy surf, mosquitoes, and alligators, and we have better hunting.

That is a bummer. I haven't shot at that area but at some other ones around so cal and they look like dumps. People bring all their junk frome computers to refridgerators to whatever, blast the crap out of them then leave the junk there. I can see why places get closed just because of the mess that is left behind. It's too bad because finding good places to shoot is getting harder. I personally don't like ranges with a bunch of rules and range masters looking over my shoulder. Mark

They have closed several places in rural sd because people keep taking crap out there to shoot at and dont ever clean it up.

Organized ranges with benches and rests for rent are great for sighting in and testing. Otherwise, I'd rather not.

This is doubly true if you introduce someone to shooting. My wife isn't a big fan of indoor ranges in particular; the ear muffs are uncomfortable, and it's loud. But when I took her outdoors to plink, she said, "This is FUN! I want to do this again!"

One thing that Jacumba and Orosco have going for them is the local Friends of the NRA does a regular cleanup there. It may look like a dump, but the stuff does get cleaned out.

Which reminds me, I want to help next time. We ran into them last time, and picked up a few bags. It felt good to be able to help keep these areas open.

I head out to octillo area we take all kinds of stuff to shoot but we always clean up, even the most minute debris is cleaned up. I hunt and I respect the land I hunt on and shoot for recreation.
