How to make a range fun.
The San Luis Obispo CA model.

Make the range staff friendly and non-threatening to noobies and OLD guys.

The range officer the day I visited the range was a young woman of whom any father would be proud and any you man would want to be around. There is some thing just nice about a pretty young blond with hip hugger pants a bare mid drift and a bullet proof vest with a 1911 Colt government model in a kydex holster. She approached a few shooters making errors and corrected them with out pissing them off.

The pistol range was lots of fun. Steel targets set up for anyone to shoot at!
Poppers, Spinning targets, plates and gongs. I asked if there were any rules for shooting the steel and she said nope just don’t shoot rifle calibers or super heavy magnum pistols at rhe steel and tear them up. The berms were strewn with golf balls! Imagine hundreads of golf balls to shoot at. They had a box of clay pigeons you could put out on the berm and shoot at. ( free )

They did not think the target stands were works of art and did not care if you shot fast accepting the risk that someone might shoot a frame. For what its worth the frames are no more shot up than they are on my home range.

The range I normally shoot sends in the fun police in swat gear if you shoot more than one round a second regardless of how well you are controlling your pistol. The range officer did keep a watchful eye for unsafe acts. But any safe shooting was ok….no matter how fun it was!

I brought 1000 rounds and four 1911’s and just had a GREAT time I shot all that ammo up in about 2 hours mostly on the steal. I got to shoot magazine after magazine as fast as I could get hits on the steel! It was great! I was standing in a sea of spent brass. I was switching guns because they were getting HOT!

We need more ranges like this. Yes we need watchful range personnel to keep us safe and watch over new shooters. But most ranges since they have customers that have nowhere else to shoot act like they are doing you a favor to let you shoot there. Range employees should work to ensure shooters are safe, and have such fun they can’t wait to come back.

Anyway if you ever find yourself down in San Luis Obispo CA make sure you shoot at that range it will leave you with a fond memory.

I participated in the Calif. State IDPA match there and those folks know how to do things right. The match was shot at a seperate range about 200 yards south, where they had 9 seperate bays with a stage in each one. Very well done, great people.
