So reading about sand and bullets... One of the first chapters of The Box Truth, sandbags are great at stopping handgun and rifle bullets, along with shotgun slugs...

Since drywall doesn't stop a whole lot, why not line the inside of your walls with sandbags to harden your house?

You never know when a few gangs might have a shoot out on your street....

Put the sandbags inside ammo cans?
thats a lot of sand.....and ammo cans.

My buddy and i were talking about making fiberglass armor plates and seeing how they hold up, probably wouldnt try do a whole house, but maybe the doors in ours, then at least there would be SOMETHING a bullet wouldnt go clean thru.

It's messy. Bugs and mice.

Telephone companies keep lots of sandbags handy for floods. Always bugs and mold oozing from them. I get to fix the chewed up equpment nearby.

Don't waste your time. Build a new concrete walled house with a brick veneer front.

This a joke, right? Filling the walls with sand would involve some major reconstruction work. Plus, there's only 3 1/2 inches of space in a hollow wall (less if you're talking about furring strips on an exterior masonry wall). And what happens when the sand gets wet? You would have a mold problem and little to no insulation.

This little piggy built his house with brick. :D

Maybe it would be easier and nearly as effective to change the exterior of the house to rock or brick. Sand would take more shots than brick but the interior would need major reinforcing for sand. Of course the windows would always be a a problem unless changed to lexan.
