I am going to be shortly buying a new rifle. I want to buy something from the AK family so I headed on over to AIM surplus and they have SAR 1 and Sar 2 available for purchase.

I have an SKS and heartily enjoy the 7.62 x 39 cartidge. I kind of want to diversify the different ammunitions i have guns for and was thinking of getting the SAR 2 off of AIM. Is the 5.45x39 a good cartridge? Is the SAR 2 a good rifle? What kind of problems may I face if I get a SAR 2 instead of a SAR 1? Will Victoria get back together with Ramone? I need some opinons.

I'm sworn to secrecy about Victoria and Ramone;) , whoever they are, and I have never handled an AK 5.45. So take this with a grain of salt. But I really like the idea of having two or three rifles that shoot the same ammo, so that if you stock up on ammo and one rifle goes down, you've still got something to shoot. Plus I just kinda like the 7.62X39 round in an AK, so I'd get the SAR-1.

Tough call since you've already got an SKS. 5.45 is a real great shooter, and the SAR2 is as problem free as the 1. 5.45 is a faster round with a better trajectory than 7.62x39, is slightly more accurate and has virtually no recoil or muzzle rise. It really is a joy to shoot. I absolutely love my SAR2. The ammo isn't at every store like 7.62x39 though. However if you're like me and mail order your ammo by the case anyway, it's no big deal. Virtually all of the big mailorder/online ammo places carry 5.45...

However, for a first/only AK I always say go with the original 7.62 and the SAR1. But with the SKS it throws a wrench in there a little, it's not an AK and not a real match for one, but it will shoot similarly and does fill that niche acceptably for alot of people... If you really want some more calibers go for it with the SAR2, in the long run I'd get a 7.62 AK as well though... Heck, I've got an SKS, a SAR1, and a SAR2 so what can I say...

I agree with MAKOwner but why not try the SAR3 in .223? You will have an AK in a different caliber that can be purchased anywhere.
