My dad just bought a Sar1. It is a nice rifle, but the top half of the forearm grip is canted to one side. Is there an easy fix for this? Is the top half connected to the gas tube? Can I put a strap on it and twist it straight or will this damage something? Forgive me if my terminology is incorrect. thanks, Mike:confused:

I don't think he's talking about cant. I think his gas tube wood may not be correctly positioned on the gas tube. If this is the case, putting the square end of the gas tube in a vise and twisting the wood to the proper position will do the trick.

Pictures from the OP would help.

That forearm wood just rests in the slots on the gas tube.

If you remove the gas tube from the gun, you can twist the wood right out of the slots. Usually the first time you do it, the wood will not want to budge. I think they assemble those rifles before the varnish on the wood completely sets. So, it acts like glue until your force the stuff to let go.

As indicated above, clamping the tube in a vise is a good idea to help you get the kung-fu grip on the wood.

If that SAR-1 does not have a trigger marked "G2," it will probably have a godawful trigger-slap problem. Most of the SAR rifles did. Spend the bucks and replace the hammer/trigger/sear set if the gun abuses your trigger finger during firing.

Remove gas tube.

Hold square end of gas tube with set of pliers.

Rotate wood around gas tube to desired position.

For added protection, wear gloves to avoid pinching fingers.

That works sometimes. The vise and two-hands method works all the time.
