Saturday shopping for a 1911

Mags should interchange. I've had some where a certain mag didn't work in a particular gun (but worked in others), but they are supposed to interchange. Don't skimp on quality when getting spare mags.

Both look like nice guns!

I have a SR1911 Commander and it is a great gun, I think Ruger really nails the "bang for the buck" category, though I got mine for closer to $600.

As for which to keep, both is the obvious answer, and whichever feels/shoots better is my honest answer.

Get the one with the Pony on it. It's the original 1911. Everything else is just a clone, which is a civil euphemism for "wannabe."

One "feature" I like on the Ruger that you don't hear much about (perhaps for good reason in terms of its relative importance or lack thereof) is the fact that the plunger tube is integral with the frame casting. The plunger tube is one part of a 1911 style pistol that can prove to be problematic by becoming loose over time. A small thing for sure, but I do like Ruger's approach.

I have a SR1911 that I EDC. It's as accurate as my Les Baers. Feeds everything I've tried. Great value.

Range observations...Took both the Ruger SR1911 and the Colt Gvmnt Model 1911 to the indoor range today for some rainy day activity. My son was with me and has claimed the Colt for a college graduation present. We shot 3 boxes of Perfecta ammo through each new pistol. Both pistols were as accurate as me and easily shot where they were pointed. Not one jam or failure to fire on either. To me, the Colt felt a little bit thinner. The frame edges on the Ruger were smoother making the grip more comfortable. Felt recoil is all subjective and may be influenced by the grip comfort of the shooter of course. The Colt to me felt slightly more snappy than the Ruger. The Ruger magazines were polished and a lot smoother to load than the Colt magazines. Both pistols limbered up a little as they were shot, and the slides became smoother than when we began shooting.

After the shooting session, my son and I took the pistols home for cleaning. I cannot explain it, but the Colt was a lot dirtier than the Ruger. The Ruger was simple to clean and not very dirty at all. The colt internals were a lot nastier.

Overall both pistols performed well and were comfortable to shoot. If I had to select only one to keep it would be the Ruger. Luckily both pistols will stay in the family.

I owned an SR 1911 commander version. It was a good solid and very reliable gun. I traded it to upgrade for a bullseye pistol but have decided another Ruger SR 1911 will be my next gun purchase.
