I have a Savage 10FP in .308 (pre-Accutrigger model). I bought a B&C Duramaxx stock for it. As I've posted here before, it contacted the right side of the barrel. Got advice on how to sand it out. However, I decided not to do that but, rather, to sell the stock and replace it. It's a great stock but I want something heavier. I admit to being sensitive to recoil and the Savage stock and the Duramaxx are both light synthetics. What options do I have for a stock which will be heavier and help dampen recoil? I shoot strictly from the bench so weight is a plus, not a negative.

the Choate "varmint" adn (what at least USED to be called the "ultimate sniper" (supposedly designed with input of John Plaster author of the book by that name) are pretty heavy (these two designs are very similar but not identical, and both of them have been offered at various times as factory options from Savage for teh 110/10 FP and FV models).

in fact they are heavy enough to qualify as "boat anchors" in my book, i like my stocks ridgid enough to not deform in regular use (as the savage factory synthetic stock does) but NOT so heavy that the rifle is a burden to carry should i decide to carry it either by sling or in my hands.

but my needs/veiws/preferences are not yours and you asked about a heavier stock for your gun, my take would be either one of the choate stocks or if you can find one (calling Savage might help here) i've heard that the laminated stock that is factory standard on the 12 BVSS is a good option for a "Bench-only" gun. in fact someone here on THR managed to to exactly that, get a 12BVSS stock and use it to restock his 10FP, though in that case it was a case of "running into the stock sitting on a shelf" type thing in his local store (previous owner had restocked the 12BVSS upon receipt and told the shop to sell it [the stock])

well hope i have been at of SOME help. good luck.

Detritus: you've been a great help! I knew about the "Ultimate Varmint" type stock but wanted something "less tactical" ;) . The 12BVSS stock, however, sounds like it might be just the ticket! I will give Savage a call on Tuesday and see if it would work. Thanks for your help!

according to the THR member who did the above combo, since the difference between the the 12BVSS and 10FP actions/barrels are simply the materials used (same scew spacing, barrel diameter, etc etc). the "working portion" from an FP simply drops into the "BV" stock, the only further parts required are longer action/bedding screws, since the depth at the "belly" of the laminated stock is a little more than that of the synthetic.

of course i could be shooting my mouth off on stuff you already know adn you simply meant you are gonna call Savage to see if they'll sell yo the needed stock adn mounting screws......:D

eitehr way good luck

Prof,
I also considered getting a 12BVSS Laminate Stock. It looks like a real good one for bench shooting. Here are some places to look for one:

Savage (1-800-370-0708).........$293
midwayusa.com.......................$193
savageparts.com.....................$110
ebay.com.......................(I saw one go for $71! My max bid was $70 :( )

Good luck!

it may not be what you are looking for, but I love my Ultimate sniper stock on my Savage 10FP :) And it does REALLY help with the recoil.

yzguy: i have considered the Ultimate Sniper and Varmint stocks but I wanted something more conventional and less "tactical" looking. :)

J Calhoun: I thank you for the link. I will check it out!

Just a note, on the stocks from the above linked vendor.

I am not in ANY way trying to discourage buying from them, i thnk they make a great product, I simply think that before buying there are a few points to be aware of.

they are NOT finished, and that fact is spelled out in the website so i figure you already know that. if you have the time and patience to sand and buff and oil them, AND to do the final "minor bits" of the inletting, etc they are great esp in light of the price. saw a person on another board though that said something to the effect of "if this is 98% finished i'd HATE to see 90%!! so on that score if you have the tools and time these can be absolutely wonderful and beautiful stocks (as evidence by the pics on the site) it's just that some folks i've run into over the net think that the extent of final finishing is a bit more than the website lead them to believe.. ~shrug~

second point, and relating to Savage stocks only, the units from Microfit do NOT have the bedding pillars, so if you want these (and you should, they're part of what makes the savage as accurate as it is) you'll have to either install a set yourself or get a 'smith or someone else who'd know how to do that work.
i personally don't have the aptitude for THAT bit of finishiong a stock. so i've had to pass on these as a possibility for MY savage project.

all that said in the next year or two i intend to build a 10/22 for my step-daughter that will be stocked with one of Richard's stocks.

again the above info is simply to let you know. b/c i think it best to pass on as much info as possible, so as to let the other person make as informed a decision as possible.

good luck and whatever you decide to do we wanna see pictures :D :D

Savage Stock

I did previously post about replacing the Savage 10FP-LE1 stock with the Savage 12BVSS. You will just have to fiddle around with the sling studs and the action screws to get everything just as you want it. No problem though. I got everything either from the original stock or Brownells and fixed it all up perfectly. I was lucky to find the stock and even more lucky that it all fit or could be made to fit. Detritus: I thank you for your continued advice! Yes, I did notice on the website that the stocks were unfinished and not completely inletted! That did give me pause as I'm not real handy with tools. I think I'll continue on the path to the 12BVSS stock. And, thanks, Lucky Jim for the input and the picture. It's nice to see what my 10FP will look like!!! :D
