I am a long time viewer of THR but this is my first post. I am seeking the advice of the masses. So here is my dilemma. I am a long time supporter of Savage Arms rifles. So when I was able to get a Savage F T/R is .308 (my favorite round) I jumped. After further inspection of the rifle when I got it home I was disappointed in the barrel crown. I have other Savage 12 target rifles that have a crown sharp as a knife, this F T/R dose not. There is a small bevel around the crown where my other rifles have the sharp edge. Along with this bevel there seams to be some small metal burrs. I have yet to shot the rifle, and I guess my question is should I contact Savage about this or should I commence barrel break in and see if it cleans up? I am skeptical. :uhoh: I will post some picture when I can. All comments welcome! - Jay

Barrel crowns protect the lands from damage. Angles, sharp edge, round edge, whatever, there's no difference.

Go shoot it and see how it does.

Bendutro - ok, so the angle that is cut into the end of the rifling and the burrs on the end of the rifling itself dont mean anything? Just try to make sure Im reading you loud and clear. Thanks

i would def call Savage, sure they will take care of it , lickity split. they do not want their proly top vote getter, and seller, and one of the best for accuracy, to get a rep for bad quality, or not being accurate.

Agreed, I will call and talk to customer service. I don’t know if my perfectionism is kicking in but something just doesn’t look right to me. I hope it doesn’t take to long to fix.

Could you take a picture of it and post it. My Savage barrel crown has a small amount of burrs, and it shoots great.

I will take a picture tonight after work. I have Savage rifles that shoot great but this F T/R is supposed to shoot excellent. And I just want to be able to get everything out of it that its capable of. I may decide in some beginner’s local competition. And just don’t want this weighing on my mind.

Burrs aren't normal, but the angle and/or sharpness of the shoulder is irrelevant. A picture would be best.

My savage has a couple ugly spots on the bolt but it shoots like a champ.

hmmmm, maybe Im just splitting hairs a bit. I will get a picute of it up later this afternoon and hope to get a verdict. And maybe some of you will tell me to just shut up and shoot the thing. :)

i just read an article somewhere, that a dude , shooting an out of the box, non tweeked savage ftr, just won a pretty big competition somewhere, shooting a sub 2 inch group at 600 yds. Now that is impressive. i would def try to see if that were my weapon with burrs on it, if I could get Savage to correct it.

I wouldn't tell you to shut up and shoot it. I'd tell you to shut up, and make a 5 minute phone call. Savage may tell you to shoot it, and send it back if it doesn't shoot.

OK OK, so I called Savage. I believe they think I’m crazy or something cause they told me that they don't believe that there would be burrs on the barrel of one of there new FT/R rifles, and that I should go and shoot it. If is doesn’t print awesome groups with match grade ammo, I was told to call back and they would take care of any issues. I was also told that I could send the rifle back to them inside of a year for anything I didn't like. Alright so I guess that means mount the scope and commence barrel break-in.

Go get'em tiger!!!! :D

We'll be expecting a full, detailed report in triplicate... LOL

Just curious, see photo, is this what yours looks like??
(yes, photo was hi-jacked from gunbroker photo)

Yeah, that what it looks like. The surface in question is on the inside and is atop the end of the high portion or the rifling. Im going to take some of my 308 loads that I currently shoot from my 12 lp and see what I get.
