Hey all,
I was cleaning my Savage Model 93 .22 Magnum bolt action today and noticed a problem with the bolt. The bolt is about 7 inches long and around the center of the length of the bolt the front of the bolt (don't know the actual term but the part that is inserted into the rear of the breach) and the back of the bolt(the part that has the handle for working the action) come together. Now at this juncture the bolt is allowed to swivel, but i don't think it should be able to. I have had the rifle for about 4 or 5 years and never remember the bolt being able to swivel at the center juncture before. Should it be able to swivel? I don't think so because then the user could have trouble inserting the bolt back into the rifle. I will be bring the weapon by the gunsmith this weekend, but i was wondering if anyone had any input, or what the correct terminology is for the 2 parts of the bolt (this gunsmith has a tendency of talking down to less knowledgable gun owners like me). Thanks for any help.

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

Most rim-fire bolts are split into two parts, and must be allowed to swivel when the handle is lifted, or you would shear off the extractors where they fit into the cuts in the rear of the barrel.

yes i was actually looking at it more closely this morning before work and it looks like this would be a necessary function of the bolt, guess i just never noticed it before. thanks for the reply, sorry for the idiotic question
