i was browsing the rifles at wally world (i was BORED) and saw a savage .22 for 99 bucks. seemed rather cheap but i have zero experience in rifles. the tag said WITH scope but i dont see a scope on it...maybe they mistagged it?

not sure what the model was but for the price is it worth it? they say you get what you pay for...

PR:

Do you remember offhand which Savage Model it is?

Savage has a well-deserved reputation for decent products at reasonable prices. A 150-Yard match-grade shooter? Probably not. But a good quality resonably accurate .22 that will gives years of pleasureable shooting time.

p.s. if it is tagged "With scope", demand that Wally cough up the proper scope.

A quality .22 rifle for $99 is always a good buy in my book. It should provide years of shooting fun.

If you are truly budget minded, shop some Pawnshops. I have found numerous .22 rifles (several with scopes) that are in great used condition for prices from $50 to $75 and they have many, many years of service left in them.

I bought one of those for my brother. Savage Mark II. It has been good for plinking and general practice, though I haven't put it through it's paces. The scope that came with it was a cheapo BSA. The iron sights are very basic. At the same price is also the Marlin Model 60, which has a good reputation as well.

alrighty then!

i checked out savages site and their .22 rifles with scopes sell for at LEAST 160 bucks. IF i decide to get the one up at wally world i WILL demand the scope. unless they had it on sale or something...

but i'm still looking at gun shops and pawn shops right now...i'm doing plenty of window shopping before i lay down some money for a firearm of any kind, especially a rifle since i know little about them.

I believe the rifle that you are referring to is a Savage Plinker.
It is a semi automatic, synthetic stocked, box magazine fed,,,,,plinking rifle.
The scope will probably be a 4X15 rimfire scope and they are usually packed seperately in the shipping box.
$99.00 makes it a decent buy.

I'm also looking at a Savage Mark II. Either the Mark II G or Mark II-FSS. Any experiences with either of these models?

The bolt action rifles are superb rifles for the money spend.
Not near as refined as a Ruger but they tend to have better barrels and let's face it, you won't find a Ruger or CZ or the new Remington in the price range of the Savage and I feel they are just as good, better really, because they are just plain enough that a shooter can really knock them around and not feel bad about it.
The closest competitor to the Savage is the Marlin bolt rifle line and with the exception of the .17 caliber rifles which tend to shoot more accurately, the Marlin offers no real advantage in the standard .22 caliber lines.

Txgolfer45;

I bought the Savage GL LHB a coupla years ago & am happy with what I got. Which is to say that I've also fooled around with it some. It's not my most accurate .22lr, but it's certainly the best value for the dollar.

Besides, I'm left handed & so is it. An Anshutz it ain't, but that's the price level for the next step up in LHB .22's.

I thought the Plinker WM sells is a Mossberg product?

Anywho, on a whim, I bought a sporter taper barreled Savage 93 in 17 hummer at a gunshow back in the summer that has turned out to be an excellent shooter. Before that I was unimpressed with the both the Savage product line and the caliber. Now I think both are top notch.

I installed the Rifle Basix trigger in the thing and it is just the last nerve for 50 yard paint balls. One shot-one splat. I'm considering a HB hummer now but can't justify it based on the way this things shoots.

That's the one i'm eyeing. That accutrigger on those mark II's sound juicy. The Marlin 60 is the most popular .22 but with the semi's you lose a little accuracy and velocity. I would go bolt-action whatever you choose.

I have the Mark II without the accutrigger and it is a good rifle. If you have the option, I would buy the accutrigger model. I also have the 10FP .308 and that trigger is awesome.

i would def go back and get that, they have to honor the scope tag, that little mkII or 64, is a nice plinker, and an accurate little bugger. will win no beauty contests, though.

Model 6A Question

I rescued an old .22 from a musty basement off a friends Dad. It's a .22 Savage Model 6A...a really old semi auto, my question is, after I pull the bolt out sideways and pull it back to rack a round in, do I have to push it back in to lock it? or leave it pulled out so that it slides back to eject rounds...or does it do that on it's own after firing it? If anyone has used one of these please let me know...thanks in advance!

In some of the less expensive 22 autos (Mossberg is one, which I own), when you pulled back the bolt it would not stay open unless you moved the knob up to hook it in the slot. Generally, when you rack a round into the chamber, the bolt is closed after the round is chambered. You press the trigger, bang, empty is ejected, and new round chambered. If it does not close, there is a problem or as in some pistols, the magazine (tubular also) must be inserted for it to go back into battery (bolt closed).

PR, I know about being bored. Yes, please do your shopping if you are in the market for a 22 rifle. Don't just buy the cheapest thing around. Do your research and then buy. The Marlin Model 60 is a good inexpensive semi-auto 22. Savage makes good inexpensive firearms. Just look at the different models before you choose one. There may be features that you prefer.
