Savage has a line of rifles they call package guns. As near as I can tell they are just their standard line of rifles that come with a scope (and are very reasonably priced).

Anyone have any experience with these rifles? Are the scopes a quality scope or just a Tasco, BSA or some other less expensive scope tossed on to the rifle? Which rifle model, i.e the FP's, LS' etc are used or are they a whole other model? The weapon/scope combo is supposedly boresighted at the factory. How well is that done?

Is a Savage Package gun worth buying if one would buy a Savage otherwise (I've been looking real hard at an FP-10 lately).

Inquiring minds want to know...

I had a package gun in .30-06. The rifles themselves are just fine, but the scope is so-so at best. If I remember correctly, the scope Savage puts on most of their package rifles is a cheapie Simmons 8pt.

My advice is to get the rifle and, if it comes with a Simmons, save up for a better set of glass.

I got a Savage 7mm Rem Mag with a Simmons scope on it. Everything worked fine. I eventually put a different scope on it, but the Simmons scope is still doing it's thing on another gun. :D

I've been very pleased with the rifle and the scope (as long as it was on the gun). You needn't be concerned about the "package" guns - IMHO at least. ;)

Good shootin'.

I got the savage varmint package gun in .223. It is a non-accutrigger heavy barreled 12fv with a 26" tube and beautiful gloss finish. It came with a simmons 4x12 power AO scope. It was a good deal (to get appv'l from the wife) at $449.

Since then.... I (clandestinely) was able to add:
B&C Duramaxx stock, SSS trigger, vari-x III 4.5x14 AO w/ sunshade, and an accu-shot monopod.

And what the heck, I chopped and recrowned the barrel to 23" for better handling and portability.

This is my favorite firearm by far. It regularly shoots under 3/4 moa w/ win varm 45gr. The simmons scope still works fine and I hope to put it on my next toy (.17hmr) when I get it.

Funny mine is an older pre-accutrigger 12fp in .308 and it came with a very nice Burris Fullfield. May not be the best scope but seems to work well for me.

It did however come with a reasonably crappy bi-pod that has now been replaced with a Harris.

Got a 10GXP3 for my son a couple weeks ago in .308. Came with a 3-9x Simmons. He and I both shot it last week and the scope seemed fine, though I have little previous experience with scoped rifles.

Mine came with a Tasco. Always figured I replace it but it's still on there and working fine.

A close friend of mine has a Simmons scope on his Mini-14 and is VERY happy. It is a 9-12x adjustable objective, though.

This same friend of mine is interested in one of Savage's packaged deals.

The only scope I have is a 9-12x adjustable objective that the same friend gave to me. All I can say is that his Simmons is MUCH (notice-ibly) clearer to look through than the Bushnell. (I don't know where the line is between these two optic companies)

I'd say the rifle/scope makes a great deal. I have only heard good things about Savage bolt action rifles.

I snagged an 111FXP3 in .223 for 350 at bass pro(on sale). Great gun, the scope is far from bottom rung but its certainly not particularly nice. Its sort've like, the Camaro RS of scopes. Yeah sure its a Camaro but its only an RS.

It shoots minute of soda-can out've the box(boresighted from the store) at 150 yards on a box've the handloads for my dad's AR-15. I'm far from a particularly good shot so that speaks volumes for me. The bolt is butter smooth and the trigger crisp and predictable. My -ONLY- complaint is you hafta hold the trigger -and- the bolt release to put the bolt back in. Its alittle tricky at first but its far from a major complaint. The sling that comes with the rifle is predictably pretty anemic. Right now I'm more concerned with working on my own accuracy rather than messing round with the gun. For me, a fella whos trying to build up his long range skills its perfect. Its cheap, shoots real well and ammo is cheap.

I'd suggest ya snag one ASAP. Down the road I'd like to get something with better lowlight performance and throw on a bipod. Its light, the perfect lenght, accurate and under 400 bucks. Whats not to love?
