HighRoaders,

So far I have not used a vise on my savage 24DL....

I had repaired the selector and replaced a firing pin spring.

I am trying to put the hammer spring back in the receiver.
A book I have says there is no easy way.
I stare at -- hold it some way -- try to compress the spring enough to go back in.

That spring is so tight that I start losing my nerve as I compress it before I get it to the point it would slip in.
I begin thinking were would the spring go and what would it do.

Any ideas? Other than more nerve?

Thanks

You'll need to drill a hole through both the mainspring plunger seat and the mainspring plunger shaft far enough down that the mainspring would be partly compressed if it were in place. Pick the spot by putting the plunger and seat in without the spring and pulling the hammer slightly back.

Put the mainspring and seat back on the plunger and compress the spring by hand until the hole in the seat and plunger line up. Then insert a stiff piece of wire to keep the mainspring compressed while you insert the assembly in the frame with the hammer forward. Then you cock the hammer slowly to relieve the pressure on the wire and remove it.

I'm impressed you were able to get the assembly out without doing this. I couldn't, which is why I thought it up. :D

I took about 3 screwdrivers with flat blades and cut a "U" in each for the different size plungers. Lather faced jaws on the vice hold the rec. it works fairly well.

model 24dl advice

I appeciate the advice..

I drove out the pins and was able to take the spring out.

I put the pins back in and the spring reinsertion problem presented itself.

Thanks
