I looked at a crusty Savage 24 .410/.22LR the other day at a pawn shop. Bore looked good in both barrels, some surface pitting on the outside, no butt plate (not a problem, can put a recoil pad on it), but the hammer was loose. Now, I cocked the hammer and when lowered, it would depress the firing pin for which it was set, seemed to function fine. BUT, inspecting it, I noticed that apparently the gun had fallen on its hammer and busted the safety notch because without pulling the trigger, it would push forward and depress the firing pin. NOT a safe situation. I went to Numrich Arms' parts site and they're out of the hammers. The thing has been out of production so long I doubt Savage Arms would have the part.
The gun was marked $249. Had the hammer been okay, I coulda taken 'em to $224, the clerk saw that was the minimum on the computer when I offered her $199 as was. I'm kinda glad i didn't get this project, now, if I can't get the hammer. I've seen these guns in good shape in better caliber/gauge combinations (always wanted the .410/.22 in my youth) going for 400 bucks and that was 15 or so years back. BUT, I can't use a gun that can't be fixed. I might can pick it up later if they drop the asking price, but I'm thinkin' I'll just forget this one and move on.
So, whatta YOU think? Would you bite for 200 if they come down or would you just move on, I mean, if you thought you'd like to own a M24 combo gun? I'm still tempted, but don't want it if I can't fix it.
