I want a rifle that is very accurate with heavy, free-floating barrel, ect. I also am limited on funds so I was looking into getting a Savage. I am essentally SET on the Savage. .308 is good, but what I really want is a .300 WinMag. I can't find one on their website with the heavy free-floated barrel. This makes me assume that they don't even make it anymore. But why wouldn't they not, dangitt?! Somebody please tell me don't have to get it in .308! Oh yeah, I'm left handed too.

Go to www.gunsamerica.com

You'll find several .300 Win Mag Savages for sale there. Here's an example:

GA# 976591212 $459.00 NIB, Factory New & unfired Savage MODEL 111FXP3 HUNTER PACKAGE SERIES rifle/scope in .300 Winchester Magnum cal. w/ AccuTrigger. Includes a matching, mounted & bore-sighted Simmons 3-9X40mm Variable Power scope. Black synthetic stock w/ positive checkering, dual pillar bedding. Short bolt-action, free-floating & button-rifled 24" bbl. Internal b
Seller: HARRIS SPORTING /
FFL Dealer: Yes Area Code: 314

You can find it in "Savage Rifles," or you can use the search function (I use the one in the long list of options printed at the top of the page.) Or you can search on the GA#.

Now, to buy it make friends with your local pawnbroker. Say, "What do you charge to do the paperwork for a gun buy? $10?"

You pay him the $10, and he gives you a signed copy of his FFL. You contact the seller, get the total price (to include shipping) and send him a money order, certified check or whatever. Include the signed copy of the FFL in the envelope.

When the rifle comes in, you go down to the pawnshop, fill out the paperwork and pick it up.

Good thing about the Savage -- you can change barrels yourself.

But I'd keep the standard barrel and shoot it out before switching. Depending on what you want to do with this rifle, you may find the standard barrel more suitable.

I had a friend who had a heavy barrel .300 WM built (on a Mauser action.) One elk hunting trip in the Rocky Mountains convinced him he needed a lighter rifle.

It will mainly be my long-range fun gun. I have always wanted to try 500+ yard shooting but never have. I have a .30-30 I can use for deer if I want. I will certainly spend more time at the range with it than in the field hunting. College has kept me out of the deer woods.

Go to the web sight, in the law enforcement catagory, the model your are looking for is the 110 FP. Mine is breathtakingly accurate, and a real hoot on the 600 yd. line. Regards, Bill
Also check out the 112 BVSS, I feel it`s a better stock for prone, and a whole lot more rigid.
As far as being a lefty goes, one school of thought is for a long range rifle, you want a wrong handed action. That way, the front end of the rifle is supported on the bi-pod, the rear is controlled by the firing hand, and the other hand can catch brass, run the bolt, etc. With the action opening toward you, it is easy to watch each round feed, or clear a jam.

Get the .308. The 300WM has a short barrel life and is more expensive to reload for (more powder per round and brass is pricey). The .308 will give you a nice platform to learn long range shooting on and the barrel will last you a long time.

Then after the 308 you decide that you need a real 1000 yard gun, you'll probably look into something in the 6 or 6.5mm calibers (ie: 6mmBR, 6.5 Swede or AI, .260 Remington or AI, 6.5x284, etc).

I'm having a brain fart so can't remember the exact model , but I had a Savage 300 WM with mat finish and composit stock .

Not classified a heavy barrel, but it was in fact a lot meaty - rrrr , than most hunting rifle barrels. And greatly accuracy as well. My point is, you may not need the "heavy" heavy barrel .

Here is my Savage 110FP in .300WM. I picked the new base rifle up cheap, then changed the stock and added a nice scope. The way she sits now I have only about $700 in it... It is accurate almost to the point of being boring.. Well, not really, but it is a blast to shoot..

You get what you pay for. Savage makes really nice varmint rifles, but a 300 Win Mag is not that. For my average build at 5' 11", 208 lbs, the three times I ever shot it, the recoil rattled my entire upper skeletal structure .. also made some skin fold back on my trigger finger enough to cause bleeding. I couldn't handle a fourth shot. I told my buddy, "Take this monster! I don't want this thing near me!" His rifle could've been more tolerable with a muzzle brake.

Like MachIV said: "Why not wait until your funds are less limited ..." Do you need this rifle right now? Save up for a little while longer and get something nice.

Taurus66, a couple of corrections, a 300 WM is fine varmint rifle, there has been a bunch of groundhogs killed with mine.
My savage IS something nice. In fact, if you saw its groups you would agree, it`s very, very, nice.
It does not rattle my 5' 9" 180 lb frame.
Oh,and I am sorry you got a boo-boo.
Regards

Oh yeah JohnDeere, a 50 BMG is a fine varmint rifle too. It's great for plinking field mice at 50 yards. lol. As for the rest, hardy har harrrrr. :p

Must be some big field mice and groundhogs where you two live. Nuclear fuel processing plants close by maybe?

Interestingly enough, I am also a lefty...and I also have been seeking an inexpensive "tacticool" rifle. Specifically one in .308 or .300 Winmag. The Savage has popped up on the radar a few times.

Anybody else have any experience with these guns?

Yep. The Savage is hard to beat. Now, it doesn't have the cachet of the Remington or Winchester, nor the fit and finish. It just shoots like billy-be-damned, right out of the box.

Well...fit and finish is for well heeled types... :D

Shooting billy-be-damned out the box is just what I am looking for!

Now if only they made a heavy barrelled .300 WinMag lefty!

It appears from their website and literature that they only offer the "tacticool" rifles (for lefties) in .308. My search continues....

That's how I've been running 'em off the bench for years. I outshot AR guys with an old M77 all weather in .223 at 200 on a regular basis. We would set up sporting clays on the burm at around 215 yds and race to bust five. I used a leupold fixed 4 compact, and a soft case folded in half as a rest. I shoot lefty, and worked the bolt with my right hand, never loosing the sight picture.
Sure made myself a bunch of change with that little gun- man do I miss it....

For a stand-up gun, I'd want a lefty action though
